Manny never seems to get recognition for this win with people saying it was 'just because Oscar was shot'. That doesn't wash with me. Firstly, you have to remember Oscar was many people's big favourite for it and he was using the fight to beat a big name fighter to set up a mega fight with Hatton. Clearly, he wasn't at his best but he chose a much smaller guy to fight and was expected to blow Pacquiao out of the water. I personally had a bet on Pacquiao to win on points because of his speed advantage but the fact that he so consistently hurt oscar with them power shots shocked me. I never thought he could stop ODLH so to see him quit on his school made this in my eyes a brilliant win. I'd say it was his 3rd best behind the 1st Barrera one and Hatton's demolishing. After making life so tough for Mayweather, I never thought Oscar would be demolished in such a one sided way, even if he wasn't comfortable at 147. What do you guys think?
I agree. I think he gets very little credit for this win. the big thing they say is that DLH was weight drained or dehydrated. But I ask them this: how is that Manny's fault? DLH didn't prepare properly for a fight he wanted at a weight he wanted, but its Manny's fault? If a fighter and his camp chose the wrong strategy when repairing for a fight, that's THEIR fault. And Oscar said himself he felt better than ever. If you don't bring your A-game, then you get beat. If you don't bring your A-game it YOUR fault. but regardless, Manny made him quit. showed DLH to be punk. I had Manny in that fight too. And it was/is a great win. Oscar thought he'd have an easy fight against a smaller guy. WRONG.
about as much as Calzaghe over Jones not much really. The manner which Pac destroyed oscar was impressive but Oscar coming all the way down to 145 or whatever and not looking brilliant against forbes and even roach saying he couldnt pull the trigger anymore it was just a name win. I dont give manny that much credit for it Oscar was done. The wins over Marquez and Cotto etc mean more
Pac's entry to the higher weights was the Oscar fight. Given how Pac is heavily favored against Hatton and Cotto shows you an honest measuring stick how people (could be unconscious) give Pac credit for the Oscar win. Haters will just hate.
he dealt with him in great fashion no doubt and it is ofcourse easy to be smart after the event but that wasent oscar in there thats why the win is kinda disregarded and imo rightly so
Oscar was a right state that night but I dont blame Pacquiao for that, he did what he had to do, he just beat a terrible version of Oscar. His last 3 wins have been great though.
Well put. Manny beat Oscar by right, be he fought no Oscar De La Hoya, so not many should give him credit. It's like giving Leon Spinks full credit for beating Ali when everyone really knew Ali was gone
for a guy that turned pro weighing 107 pounds and fighting a guy who fought for the middleweight title, its pretty amazing
I've always thought about that and laughed. Pacquiao was fighting a man that has fought Bernard Hopkins. Unbelievable!
I think Pac deserves all the credit in the world for taking that fight but you can't tell me Oscar was himself that night. Besides being at the tail end of his career I think he was clearly weight drained. Mind you, that's not Pac's fault. But when the fight was made everyone was expecting the same Oscar that fought Floyd and he was not at all. Didn't Freddy Roach even say that he could tell before the fight that Oscar was weight drained from the IV marks on his arm? Pac does deserve all the credit in the world for taking the fight though. All i'm saying is that there are a hand full of guys at WW that would have whooped Oscar that night, he just wasn't himself.
I agree. I don't knock Pac at all. I think if anyone wanted to see DLH lose though, they wanted him to atleast be able to fight... Oscar hardly threw a punch. It's like when Gatti May fought, Gatti is a warrior, but he didnt even fight back. If you ask a Gatti fan, they probably wouldn't give Floyd alot of credit either cuz he didn't beat the Gatti that used to go to war to win
it was a very good win. pac came in as the underdog. who wouldve thought hoya would look awful that night. pac was cherrypicked and after the win, he was called the cherrypicker by haters..
