The scenario is that we are in a futuristic world where old fighters are brough back by way of time machine to fight. Your task is to pick a winner (even money). You know not only what happened to that fighter in his own time, but also the results of a few warm up fights. Each scenario is totally different. ie the results of scenario 1 are of no relevance or difference to Scenario 2 etc. Scenario 1- Jack Dempsey vs Lennox Lewis - Dempsey wins by KO in rnd 4 against Vitali. Lennox fights Jimmy Braddock and wins a close decision over 12 rounds. Scenario 2 - Andrew Golota vs Joe Louis - Joe Louis beats Jameel McLine by controversial Split Decision after being knocked down in rnd 3. Golota handles Joe Walcott easily in 8 rnds. Scenario 3 - Bob Fitzsimmons vs Mike Tyson - Bob Fitzsimmons knocks out Riddick Bowe in 6 rounds after dominating the affair and showing no concerns about Riddick's power. Fitzsimmons power was worrying Bowe. Tyson tunes up by knocking out Ezzard Charles in a round. Scenario 4 - Gene Tunney vs George Foreman - Gene Tunney warms up by fighting Earnie Shavers. Shavers doesnt win a round, much like Tunney Dempsey 1. Foreman fights Billy Conn and wins a split decision. So i am interested, with these scenarios, who do you pick, does the warm up fights have any effect on your pick, and how confident are you?
If Braddock gave Lewis serious trouble and Dempsey knocked out Vitali in four, it would basically be near impossible to pick Lewis. They seem like wild picks to me though buddy.
Dempsey stopping Vitali in 4 and then Lewis winning a close one against Braddock really jumped out at me as well to be honest.
Lewis has never fought a smaller mobile guy like Braddock. It is assumed that superheavys are too big and blast these guys out. The reality is that anyone can have a bad day and be taken the distance. It doesnt mean Lennox wouldnt blast out Braddock in one next time up. but it does indicate taht their is no class difference between the two eras. In other words, Lennox vs A good fighter from the era (dempsey) will be a fight and not likely a blow out. Likewise, Willard is assumed by many to be an unskilled giant, and Vitali a skilled modern superheavy. The Dempsey win shows he can do to modern super heavys what he did to Willard. Now the question then becomes, who is your money on. Lennox or Dempsey. Is Lennox that much better than Vitali, that he would still be favoured over Dempsey, or is Lennox going to beat Dempsey in a boxing match, even though it is unlikely that his power and reach will be simply to much for him, because of his size. I am interested to see how many people are able to change their line of thought on these things according to how certain questions are answered. And let us be honest, despite all the crapping on about film and such forth their really so many unanswered questions when matching fighters of current eras, let alone different eras.
Good pick. I think i agree with you. Tunney's chances of victory in such a fight rely on him being able to take a foreman punch. To be perfectly honest, there is no evidence that Tunney has anything but a first class chin. In fact, despite limited heavyweight fights it is probably likely that he takes a better punch than Jimmy Young. He certainly did for his time.
Vitali didnt have a better chin than Willard, in fact in his present condition, he was very, very similar to Willard. Why in the world is it difficult to see Dempsey stopping him in 4. Is it difficult to see say Tyson stopping him in 4? Vitali has taken some big bombs, but so had Lennox before Hasim and oliver stopped him. Vitali has never been attacked and placed under pressure like Dempsey did to Willard. I seen nothing unrealistic about this. IN fact if Dempsey is as good as many people suggest he is, and he lands early on Vitali (or anyone else), i would say it is the most likely outcome, if not sooner.
Most of those scenarios are completely off base. You can't just base a fighter on their last fight either
Boilermaker, i wasn't trying to come across as taking the **** or anything like that. What you're saying is though, that because Vitali hasn't yet been put under immense pressure, then that should mean he wouldn't handle it if he was. That's speculation. I don't rate Vitali too high, i know his style though, and he does have a ring presence and doesn't have a weak chin. Also, you said you'd favour Dempsey over the current Vitali, if we're going to use shot versions then why not use the Dempsey who lost to Tunney? To keep things fair and all that. Anyway, i wasn't really getting at what you said about Vitali being stopped in four exclusively, it was the fact that you said it in conjunction with Lewis fighting a struggle with Braddock. Now, hoping that you don't answer me with another question about how so and so did with Lennox, i want to say that Lewis would beat Braddock going away.
Amir Khan vs George Foreman in a street fight if Foreman had lost 5 streight fights to 12 year old girls by KO and Khan had KOed Tua and McCall with one punch in a nightclub.
