Frank Warren new TV deal: 3 Saturday shows rumoured for September

The TV deal might come through, but Warren hasn't exactly been on top of his game lately.

Until one or more of these shows happens in full (or near as damn it) I'm sitting on the fence.

 

Part of me thinks that it will be ESPN and part of the deal will be having his stable of fighters broadcasted over in the states for exposure

 

I'm not sure the sports you mentioned have done all thast brilliantly. Cricket is kept alive by 20/20, which is a by-product of Sky and the other sports aren't as mainstream as they were on terrestrial. For example, is anyone in rugby league as well-known as Eddie Waring used to be? And while Phil Taylor is the best darts player ever, is the sport as big as it was in the days of Eric Bristow?

 

I dont understand why people drop hints at what might happen. Either tell us or dont

Rugby League has always been a minority sport which has suffered a lack of mainstream press exposure. The benefits of the sport being on sky is the clubs can actually survive and the sport actually has a platform to try and grow. Sky dont treat it as the little brother to Rugby Union.

I would argue Darts is bigger than when Bristow was playing. Back then it may of got big ratings on the BBC but has Darts ever really had the crowd numbers on a weekly basis which the Premier League gets now? The PDC has been on Sky since day 1 and has grown rapidly. The BDO has been on terrestrial tv from day 1 and you would find it hard finding people who knew it even existed.

Terrestrial tv doesnt gurantee anything. A sport like boxing needs stars. Whether they are built on sky or terrestrial tv it doesnt really matter. When Audley Harrison turned pro many people would of said he will get more exposure on terrestrial tv and would be wise to sign with the BBC. Well we all saw how that turned out. It didnt matter that more people has access to BBC than Sky as Harrison was a flop and not a star so BBC ended up losing. Ricky Hatton was never on terrestrial tv and become a huge mainstream star. There really is no evidence to suggest that boxing or boxers cannot become household names if they only fight on sky.

atschFor Gods sake, boxing. Its the ad revenue they'd be picking up I assume, my sources tell me they've got MMA (Strikeforce) some boxing (Warren by the sounds of it) and Curling.

 

Only if it could get the sports rights. What free to air sports channel can realistically afford to get the rights to the likes of UFC, Rugby, nfl, Rugby, etc etc. Never going to happen.

I thought strikeforce had a deal with Bravo?
