Macklin could pull out of Barker fight again for IBF Eliminator

    The IBF has warned Matthew Macklin that he could ruin his world title chances if he goes ahead with his European title fight with Darren Barker.

    The world governing body revealed that the Irish middleweight has agreed to participate in a world title eliminator against Giovanni Lorenzo.

    Emerge victorious from that bout and Macklin will become number one contender for Sebastian Sylvester’s IBF middleweight strap and subsequently get the world title shot he has actively pursuing for the last eight months. However, upon hearing, last Friday, that the Birmingham born fighter was set to fight Barker for the European title, the IBF are considering withdrawing their offer.

    Frank Warren won the purse bids to stage the exciting European clash and is all set to name a date and venue for the fight. It was hoped that Macklin could regain the continental strap he vacated earlier this year before pursuing the world route, but IBF have revealed their rules don’t permit that.

    Thus, if Macklin wants the opportunity to become mandatory for the IBF world middleweight title he will have to pull out of the fight with Barker.

    “Both Giovanni Lorenzo and Mathew Macklin have agreed to participate in an IBF eliminator for the number middleweight position. But now we have a problem. If Macklin is planning to fight for the EBU Title, under IBF Rules he is considered unavailable,” IBF spokesperson Lindsey Tucker told the Irish Mirror.

    “Macklin can't fight for the EBU Title and come back later and fight the IBF Eliminator. We just found out last Friday (after Macklin's camp agreed to fight in the IBF Eliminator) that Macklin's camp went to the purse bid and bid on the EBU Title fight. Had I known that Macklin was the mandatory challenger for the EBU and planned to participate in a purse bid for that fight, the IBF would not have sent Macklin a letter asking him to participate in the IBF eliminator.”

    if fighting Barker puts his IBF shot in jepordy then he should drop it and Barker should face Andy Lee instead.

    Well Macklin vacated the belt to go in search of a world title. If he fights Barker at the expense of an eliminator for the IBF, he will look very foolish. I expect him to fight Lorenzo.

    On the Oz forum, it is reported Geale has been offered the shot. Hope it is untrue.

    Macklin should go for the title eliminator, I think he'd have a good chance of beating Sylvester. If Barker can beat guys like Lee, maybe Asikainen, Lorenzo etc. then he can drop the European title and fight Macklin later.

    Well Macklin has been saying he's up for it and that he hopes Barker doesn't back out, so he will look bad if he were to walk away now short of getting an actual title tilt.

    I think Barker is fairly well respected so in the long term were he to win I see no damage done.

    Still if there was a clear route there to a title it seems foolish to come out with the things he has!!!

    I'm pretty sure he was under the impression that he could beat Barker, making a pretty penny along the way, and then have the eliminator. But the IBF subsequently let it be known that it must be made asap.

    why would it seem foolish?

    It's the IBF that is making him pull out. He would knock Barker out insider 6 rounds in my opinion.

    Lee beats him on points as well

    Still, when a shot is in the offering why risk it against a live fighter at the stage that Macklin is at. V high risk.

    You miss my point, why take the risk if you have a shot in the offering. Especially for a belt that you vacated in order to get a shot.

    I can only think that it would also be seen as a tune up for the biggest fight of his life. Macklin seems very confident he has the beatings of Barker. Just speculating here.
