Bernard Hopkins is proof Mayweather is overrated defensively

Bernard Hopkins vs
Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones, Calzhage, Pavlik, Taylor, Felix Trinidad at his peak never once even REMOTELY hurt, phased, wobbled or anything near it.

Floyd - best two opponents offensively and both where no where near their prime (few fighters become better offensively with age)

Oscar - Rallied to penetrate Floyd's defense which is not supposed to happen, an older fighter breaking down the defense of a younger one.

Shane - Whatever you want to say about the entire fight at the end of the day even if it was for 2 seconds there was a gaping hole in Floyd's defense and he was as close as you can be to being knocked out.

Floyd has a tiny body of work against premier offensive fighters both not at their peak and both were allowed big big chances to win. Bernard against even better and more of a body of work was never for a second anywhere near what Mayweather endured punishment wise in his 2 fights. Yet if you asked 100 people they would say Floyd is the best defensive fighter ever.

I threw out Marquez because he was at a weight he never fought in his life and Floyd was so much bigger his defense could not even be judged because it was won with the terms of the fight not by the fight itself.

Sir yes sir. That is my proof. I dont think any fighter could face that level of opposition especially an orthodox fighter and get damaged as little as bhop did. some of the highest percentage knockout fighters ever and he never came close to flinching. think about it.

It was not like Hopkins was never hit: DLH hit him , Taylor hit him, etc.
I disagree Mayweather's defense is overrated. It's great. However if you compare it to Hopkins' I think the latter one's D if better though.

 

Hopkins is brilliant defensively.. but dont forget Floyd was a little guy not too long ago..

intersting points. Bernard is a great defensive fighter though. People underrate him. No shame in being under Hopkins. The dude is one of the most sound technical boxers ever, even though he fought way under his potential throughout a lot of his career. His domination of Trinidad was boxing 101.

 

What you showed in this thread is that Hopkins has a great defense and has taken little punishment over the years...NOT that Mayweather's defense is overrated. If you believe Mayweather's defense is overrated, I suggest you watch a little more boxing...because after all, no-one can dodge, slip, or block every punch right?

 

So Mayweather is hurt by the biggest puncher in the division and all of a sudden he's got a leaky defence?

And how much bigger was Hopkins than most of these opponents you mentioned? Trindida and DHL did their best work at 135 - 147. Pavlik was outweighed on fightnight by ten pounds. RJJ fought him with a broken hand. Hopkins was hurt by Calzaghe's pace to go to the wrong corner four times and cheat like crazy to get breathers.

Mayweather fights clean, fighters of his own size. I admire Hopkins, but this is a stupid argument.

 

If there is a huge gaping hole in Floyd's defense for about 2 seconds then the average boxer's hole lasts for 5 seconds. Floyd has been stunned several times in his career but he has never been beaten even once whereas Hopkins has tasted a loss 5 times. You lose more points when you suffer a loss as opposed to getting caught by a hurtful shot. Granted Hop has fought more difficult opponents than Floyd has however Floyd is a better offensive fighter than Hop, and part of a great defense is a great offense. I think we'll get an even more clear indication of where Floyd stands historically if he shuts down Pacquiao because it would mean he conquered the ultimate offensive machine. At that point calling him the greatest defensive fighter of all time would not be outrageous.
