I am critisizing Ingemar for not fighting any big punchers. The only real puncher he fought was Patterson, whom he lost to twice. Cooper could wack with the left hook, but I doubt Henry landed anything meaningful in their short fight. Plus Cooper was in the 180s. What 6'2 + 200lb + punchers did Ingo fight who were world class? It brings me back to the Ed Sanders Point.

I don't exactly see why he should fight Valdes and DeJohn who were ko'd by Machen rather than Machen just because they were bigger than himself. Ingo fought quite a few fellows who were bigger than himself.

I think Machen was a more dangerous puncher than Valdes or DeJohn.

I think Cooper was a more dangerous puncher than DeJohn.

It is true that Ingo got Cooper, Machen, and Patterson (in the first fight) out of there before they could test his chin. He would have tried to do the same with Valdes and DeJohn and I at least think he would have succeeded.

*I honestly think Ingo and his management probably did not know who Cleveland Williams was until 1961 or so. He was not a world rated fighter and without international TV Williams was probably all but unknown in Europe.

**It should be pointed out that Ingo fought men bigger than the ones you named, such as Ten Hoff and Neuhaus, and knocked them out easily. There is no evidence that big was a problem for Ingo as a pro.

***I think little Bob Satterfield would have been a more dangerous punching test than any of those big guys you mentioned except Liston. Satterfield could not only punch. He was quick.

Been boxing for ten years, was a decent middleweight when i quit at 18 but i dont see what this has to do with it.A KO is a KO,winning by decision is not a KO.

You are one of the premier posters on this forum, but to use this cosmetic argument is not only devious it is lazy, the time scale is all important here. To talk about when McBride fought Valdes and when Johansson fought him ,and compare results .They are two different eras.
Besmanoff had most of his important fights in the States he was near the LHVY limit when he fought the bulk of his Euro fights.
Even if you accord Cooper top status , [ highly debatable ] ,that is a total of THREE men who were top class that INGO met.I am English myself Cooper was born and raised less than 20 miles from me, unlike Swede, I don't let that influence my judgement.

Only to people who initiate rude remarks, and think because they have a common language with a fighter they have the inside track on his career. That is arrogance imo.

    PS. You forgot old .

Not in the slightest, I am devoid of jingoism, I root for who I think is the best man,Cooper was fringe world class at best. Had tissue thin facial skin and lacked weight.imo
London was an erratic" on top" type of fighter.Patterson humiliated him ,Ali played with him.Beaten 3 times by Cooper.
Erskine was a decent boxer who lacked power ,and size ,he was also Welsh.Kod emphatically by Cooper
Richardson was a dirty ******* who used his nut, he was never anything special and lost to all the topmen he fought, he also was Welsh. Also stopped by Cooper.

Ingo cleaned out the English heavies to be sure, [ all 2 of them  ],, but he kept well clear of the majority of the Yanks.:good

I am of Danish extraction on my Mother's side [Haggar],and German on my Father's,[Raeder].

I support the best man,[ even if he came from Sweden, which he very rarely did].

Exactly inter-continental fights have always been harder to make and usually there needs to be a world title at stake really. A European Champ, won't get enough bums on seats fighting a no name American to offer the no name American good money to come over. The managers probably didn't even get a chance to speak to each other, or probably even see each others fights

Ingo is somewhat unproven against big men and massive punchers, but Baer himself is largely unproven against big punchers and Ingo is certainly a banger

So this means when your favourite fighter lose, you just pick another?

Ingo fought good quality opposition considering he was away from the main action era. The top German, British ans Italians were at least on a par with DeJohn, the later Valdez, Mittef, and Besmanoff etc.Incidentally Ingo is the only HW champion who never fought a "negative win-loss record" fighter. As for Baer, it's a pick-um!
