Arguello vs Mayweather at 130

Nobody and I mean Nobody beats Mayweather at 130 pounds. Mayweather was as close as you can get to the perfect fighter at 130, if he threw more combination's at 130 he would be in my eyes the perfect fighter, at least at 130.

 

Agreed. He's one of those special fighters H2H at certain weights, like Roy Jones or Sweet Pea.

 

I like Arguello by UD. I think his accurate punches find their way enough times to the elusive Floyd.

 

The slow drip wears the whole in the stone. Mayweather wasn't trying to stop Mosley, but he got close to it through sheer accumulation of accurate punching. Anyway, Mayweather was a different fighter then, with a commitment to finishing and a generally more aggressive and active punching style. Corrales folded through accumulation. Mayweather didn't even need to step on the gas.

"Engaging with an Arguello" - who says he'll be doing that? Where in my post did I suggest that Mayweather's going to be trading punches with the man? Of course he's not. It's accumulation.

 

Chavez at 130 could beat Mayweather. I don't know why we don't see threads on that as often.

 

Mayweather was trying to stop Mosley, he just isn't going to throw combinations or excessively gassing himself trying to do it. Corrales didn't fold, the towel got thrown in and he was mad, he may have gone in the 10th/11th - but Mayweather usually takes his foot off the gas after a big round to get his air back.

Mayweather really went for the stoppage in round 7 against COrrales (Mayweather Sr shouted from the crowd around 3 'he'll be ready to go around the 7th and Floyd went for it that round)

Arguello would look to jab much more than Corrales but its a slow jab and that invites Mayweather's counter right. The best way for this type of fighter to fight Mayweather is to punch with him, which is hard to do for most fighters because it hurts and takes bravery

Yeah, it's not something Arguello did. I'm not a fan of his jab either.

The point I was really trying to make PP is that it's not like Mayweather has to get into big exchanges and trading punches to push the stoppage. He can do it in a relatively safe way.

Nah, Julio Cesar Chavez eats Mayweather at 130.

Look at the trouble Mayweather had for a few rounds with Jesus Chavez at 130. Look at the trouble Mayweather had for 12 rounds with Jose Luis Castillo only 5lbs north of this weight.

Chavez is light years ahead of both Jesus and JLC, he is the perfect fighter to outfight Floyd over the course. I have always had no doubt that Chavez convincingly outpoints Mayweather at superfeather and light.

 

I like Arguello in this one, if the fight goes 15 rounds. The championship rounds would be all his, because he would have Floyd firmly on the retreat by that point, and those long, raking shots would be making their mark. Over 12 rounds, I think Floyd could ride his bicycle to a decision, but over 15 I back Arguello's spirit and artillery to win the day.

I'm strictly talking about 130 and Julio Cesar Chavez wasn't the same fighter at 130 then he was at 135. If you're going to be a simpleton and say Jesus Chavez gave Floyd problems at 130 so that's why he cannot beat JCC, then I can say JCC can't beat Floyd cause of how glorified gatekeeper Juan La Porte gave JCC a relatively close fight.

Juan LaPorte does not fight anything like Floyd Mayweather though, so your point doesn't have any value.

Jesus Chavez fights in a similar style to Julio Cesar Chavez, but is basically vastly inferior to JC Superstar in every way, so my point does have value.

JC Chavez may not have reached his peak yet, but the 1984-5 version who crushed Martinez, Castillo and Roger Mayweather was still light years ahead of anyone Floyd fought at 130 in terms of ability.

He has all the tools to outfight Floyd over 12 rounds.
