So what round would Lennox Lewis lay out Liston?

Liston beat a damaged Patterson and damaged contenders.

 

Good video and I do agree that he was very well shot against Leotis Martin. Liston had a great chin and was an accurate ko puncher though at time he did throw a bit wild but overall he was a technically-skilled puncher. I like how he fought though I am a Patterson fan.

Oh yeah. the fight he lost every round to a china chinned hobo with no stamina. Didnt just lose- he was outboxed and outjabbed. The supposed boxing master with a supposedly great jab... Funny how Bruno and Mercer were able to outjab him... You know, the fight Lewis was on the verge of losing by KO before landing a hail mary punch he had probably never thrown in his life before that...

 

Williams was a good contender and Patterson was a proven heavyweight who won the hvy title twice so in no way was he a "middleweight" you're discrediting not only Liston but Patterson too. Patterson was scared but Liston was an intimidating fellow around that time I can't blame him plus Liston beat him twice. I give Patterson all the creidt in the world for having the balls to face him twice.

 

Lewis wouldn't lay out Liston.
Liston could take Lewis from the outside as well as the inside. I don't really see anyway Liston loses unless he comes in unmotivated or gets caught.

 

In a series, I'm going with Lennox to win. I'm not saying Sonny couldn't get a knockout in occasionally, which is why I prefer picking Lennox to win a series, but I do think Lennox was the better fighter. If forced to predict one fight, I would go with Lennox by a late stoppage, after surviving an early scare.

 

I dont know how scared patterson was of Liston. He didnt have to give Liston the title shot. Most of America at the time was against Liston getting a title shot based on his scrapes with the law and had Patterson ducked him he would have had a lot of support. Patterson fought him because it was the right thing to do AND because he wasnt scared of him. Furthermore, whats forgotten amidst all of the "Patterson was scared of him talk" is that Patterson's greatest ambition from 1964 on was a third fight with Sonny Liston He talked about this often in interviews. If he was scared of Liston he could have simply continued doing what he was doing which was fighting a lot of good fighters and winning more than he was losing up until his retirement when he was well past his prime. No one would have thought less of him but he chose to go after Liston without ever getting the match.

 

What scares did Lewis ever survive? Bruno maybe but if Bruno is the guy putting the scare into you and you have to "survive" that scare that says all you need to know. He may have survived a scare or two against Mercer but does it really count if you get a gift decision?


Going on what Ive seen if you scare Lewis you win. If you land a hard right on the button from a one punch puncher hes going down and looking drunk on the canvas. Liston could twist a guys head around with a right hand and follow it up with a left hook that would put your head in the cheap seats. I dont see Lewis beating him.
