How badly does Larry Holmes beat George Foreman?

Larry out-boxes George over 12 rounds, in rounds probably 8 to 4 or 7 to 5. Larry doesn't escape this fight unscathed and George drops him more than once.

 

Summer vacation. The teenie weenie widdle kiddies have been let out of school for matinee season. When these snot nosed brats are again occupied with flunking their classes and homework assignments in September, the grown ups will have their forum back.

 

Holmes outboxes Foreman and possable stops him late. No way in hell does Foreman beat Holmes.

Foreman had trouble with boxers who can jab, play defense, move, and take a punch. Its a shame Holmes never fought Foreman in the mid to late 70's, because if he did, you could make a strong case from him being #1 of all time.

I'm a Holmes fan but KenNorton804 might be on to something here. When you look at Larry's resume it's not too impressive. That doesn't mean Larry wasn't as good as most believe he was but his level of opposition doesn't make me believe that he would walk all over big George either. Holmes had a decent chin but Ali's was much better. Shavers and Snipes almost ko'd Holmes with 1 shot and were unable to follow up due to lack of skill. If George had Larry in desperate condition after flooring him I think he would finish him. I still favor Holmes in this matchup but after closer examination due in part to Norton's post the odds drop a little.

 

Foreman lately is overrated in a lot of these fantasy match ups IMO. Even I was guilty of this before. Holmes out boxes foreman to a ud. Holmes is skilled enough and durable enough to do the job.

 

Believe me Ken I know that Foreman could be fast when he wanted to be. He was a big strong athletic son of a ***** who could actually box. George's problem was in his head. Like Gil Clancy said, the early version of Foreman never learned to relax in the ring. He wanted to rely on his power too much and when that didn't work he was usually too tired sometimes to implement plan B. George could certainly beat Larry. Of that I have no doubt. But if he fights a stupid fight ala Young and Ali then Holmes has the necessary skills to make him pay. I think George became a better boxer in his second coming back in the 80's. He paced himself much better, utilized his vastly underrated jab more and boxed more. His power would always be there, he just used other tools along with it. So yes if George fights a smart fight against Holmes then he can take it-probably by ko. If he doesn't then it could be Ali/Young all over again.

 

Holmes had trouble with those types of fighters as well, as referenced by his struggles with Witherspoon, Williams, and Spinks. Larry looked great against guys who were slower or guys who were plodders. But Holmes would have struggled against fighters that fought like him, guys like Buster Douglas, Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, Tyrell Biggs, etc.

 

After the Ali fight, Foreman just seemed unsure of himself. The Foreman
who fought Norton was sure of himself and would have beaten Larry Holmes. Holmes would be smart enough to box but this Foreman would
have found Larry and finished him.

 

I think prime Foreman's ability to cut off the ring is understated. Forget the Young fight. Foreman was trapping Ali, which forced Ali to go bold. Ali really out-toughed and out-smarted Foreman as much as he was out-boxing him. Larry would get pushed back, and we know he can't take a punch as good as Ali. Foreman can very well catch him early and finish him.
