    can anyone tell me about fighters who have lost at the domestic level and still went on to achieve at the world level or closely contend?

    Can't think of a single one.
    Amir Khan would have, but fortunately he dodged the domestic scene.

    Danny Williams was the first name that came to my head...he lost to Julius Francis I think, and then went on to challenge Klitschko.

    nigel benn lost to Michael Watson for the commonwealth title

    he did alright at world level

    He did better than alright mate. 2 weight world champion, 12 ( i think ) defences of SMW wbc title.
    Watson was hardly what you'd call domestic level though.

    benn should have beaten tyson

    he was scared of him though... got it in his head he couldnt win

    so buster got the credit

    He was fairly well known and was in no way a domestic fighter.
