EXACTLY, I have said this for years and infact just said it on another thread a couple of days ago - Top men are Top men - many of them capable of beating one another on any given night.

and like you say, ofcourse many never got their chance, look at Britain's great middleweights from this period, Len Johnson, Jock McAvoy and Bert Gilroy, middleweight terrors, yet never afforded the chance and constantly fighting above their weight.

Was Sugar Ray a slow starter, he seems to start slow in the fights Ive seen, what about at his prime, did he go in guns balzing like Dmepsey or Tyson or start slow like Louis?

He could do everything. He had no real major weakness.

Like one historian said... if God could mold the most perfect fighter he'd make Ray Robinson. No doubt about it... he was the closest thing to perfection as a fighter in a boxing ring. I don't want to hear anything about Greb because on a pound 4 pound level he'd get the floor whipped with Robinson. I actually think Armstrong is superior to Greb in some P4P universe.

I could RHAPSODIZE about Robinson. Wished all posting on this thread could've seen him live, in his prime. You'd recognize instantly why he's venerated.

You have a closed mind..."I don't want to hear anything about Greb ".
Maybe we should also ban the name Greb from the recordbooks ...You say "Robinson would wipe the floor with Greb ".sure just as Robinson "WIPED " the floor with Ralph Tiger Jones...Right ? Have you even seen Ray Robinson fight ? No, Have you any idea what a record Harry Greb had
in his amazing 300 fight career against HOF fighters, some outweighing him by 15 to 50 pounds ? NO. And with ONE eye...I have seen Robinson in his prime and he was the best fighter I have EVER seen, but Robinson
never could have duplicated Harry Greb's record..NEVER could have whipped such great larger men as Gene Tunney, Tommy Loughran,
Tommy Gibbons, Jack Dillon,Maxie Rosenbloom, Gunboat Smith, Bill Brennan
Battling Levinsky etc, some time and again...These great LH's weighed 15 and more lbs, than Greb...Robinson avoided the likes of Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Harold Johnson, Lloyd Marshall, Charley Burley etc..
Robinson wisely knew his limitations and avoided these bigger mnen...
Harry Greb avoided no one regardless of size ,style or color...
But you dismiss the great Harry Greb with scorn,as if he was not worthy to fight Ray Robinson...They were both immortals worthy of each other,
    I say...

Right, but Greb is described as a fast swarming fighter. Armstrong is the greatest pressure fighter on film, and he could punch fairly good (Was usually fighting bigger men too). He held 3 titles at once. I seriously doubt Greb equals Armstrong.

As for Greb... we can't say he could do everything because he couldn't/didn't hit hard.

As for SRR vs Greb. What I really mean is I believe Robinson was the more complete in terms of a skilled package. I'm not sure how Greb vs SRR would go in some P4P fantasy match, but naturally I'd be more confident in Robinson's chances.

You're basing that opinion off of me based on a paragraph? Real astute of you. If you don't want to hear Greb then don't visit these boards. Greb, Armstrong, Langford are the only real legit threats to SRR commonly perceived status as being #1 with Greb probably being the biggest threat.

Did you have a bad day Burt?

I do feel based on the film I have seen of Robinson, and the descriptions of Greb that in some P4P fantasy matchup Robinson would win. Why does that bother you? I'm reaffirming my believe that Robinson is the best fighter ever. Sorry my opinion bothers you.

Live? No. I should've known not to reply when you said this.

No, you say a lot more that's totally unrelated and unnecessary to my comments. Never said Robinson could duplicate Greb's run. SRR best weight was welterweight.

Lets cut to the chase! You first said that "Robinson would wipe the floor with Greb".Now you say that Robinson could not duplicate the career Greb had with larger HOF fighters...If Robinson could not lick such bigger and stronger men that Harry Greb did,as you agree, Robby would have had his hands full with the Pittsburgh Windmill in a H2H match, I assure you...
We all are entitled to our opinions about who was a greater P4P fighter,
but the records prove who had a more impressive career...Greb along with Langford and Fitz fought and beat such heavier men during their careers
that I rate them as the best P4P fighters of alltime...Robinson the most beautiful to watch and he had everything but the ruggedness to do what Greb, Langford or Fitz accomplished , in my opinion....

That's why I said P4P. My point is I think Robinson is more complete. Nothing wrong with that.

    That's fine and fair.

Greb was not a scientific a fighter as Robinson was.... in fact as he a scientific fighter at all? He always rushed in with his fast punches, but did he do anything else ever, could he adapt like Robinson, everything Robinson did in the ring was based on scientific principles that he knew, could the same be said for Greb. Im not critisizing Greb BTW, its a genuine question, as great a fighter as greb was, was he a scientific fighter or just a brawler intentding to hurt or win by throwing punches?

You are completely wrong about Harry Greb..He was not a classical boxer
in the Robinson mode, but was wily as a fighter could be..He knew the "ropes",so to speak and was able to overcome great punchers ,great boxers etc ,to survive and whip so many heavier HOFamers in a career of 300 wars...The difference between a Henry Armstrong and Harry Greb was Greb's fantastic foot speed, which made Greb a VERY difficult target to hit solidly...He was bouncing to and froe never in the "same spot for a second",as Tunney described him...Armstrong wastationary when avoiding punches, and took more punishment than Greb...Aside from Greb.s loss in his first YEAR to the heavier Joe Chip,Harry Greb was NEVER stopped in his remaining career...And he licked heavyweights also...Remarkable man was
the Pittsburgh Windmill....We will never see his likes again,as with Sugar
Ray Robinson...They both had UNIQUE qualities in the ring...

I'l admit Im not the greatest authority on Greb, dont know a great deal about him, no doubt he was a great fighter. just wasnt sure if he was a scientific boxer or not, john l for example admited to just throwing bombs, marciano as well wasnt much of a scientific fighter, i didnt knw about greb but sure if you say that he was a clever fighter similar to the way dempsey was, (dempsey shows a lot obout his knowledge of scientific boxing in his book) then il beleive you, you know greb better than i do. a match between greb and robinson would be great, a tough one to call.
