Its not about the 20 title defense, most of em were ham and eggers any way. Marciano would have went though with what Holmes and face and taking out Spinks to boot imo. 30 guys that rank over Holmes Louis Ali Marciano Robison Greb Ross Armstrong Gans Dixion Fitz 10 Terry McGoven Benny Leonard Tony Canzi Kid Galvian Micky Walker SRL Hagler Hearns Dundee Jofer 20 Harada Battling Nelson Wolgast Ike Williams Joe Brown Ortiz Arguello Duran Chavez Joe Walcott 30 Other ten Ted Kid Lewis Jack Brittion Jimmy McLarin Archie Moore Basilio Griffith Sweet Pea Billy Conn Jack O'Brien Tommy Loughran Non of them are in any order, but these are guys I am pretty sure most would rank over Holmes with out a 2nd thought.
A great champion has to be 1 consistent 2 Able to win even when the sky starts to rain **** 3 disciplined and has to have 4 a long reign Holmes did everything needed to be called great. Top 5 minimum at HW
I think long rein is over rated. Armstrong didnt have a long rein in either of his 3 title reins and he is in most people's top 3 pound for pound. Most people have Liston in the top 5 base on his year rein. And its mostly poltics which determinds who gets the shot or not. Sure Langford, McVey, Peter Jackson be rate lower because they didnt get the needed title shot?
Fantastic delusional post! I won't even address the fact Holmes is a top-5 heavy... That would be like talking to paint. Rather, I want to address your brilliant list... Ever hear of a guy named Langford?
You give no credit for stopping Bert Cooper? Where is the love? If Jimmy Young took Foreman to death's door, Holmes would have carried him over the threshold and tucked him into bed. Scott Frank was firmly in the heart of his prime. I do like your contention that Norton won their fight. Kudos for creative scoring!
Langford would have been there if I was not thinking of 40 names to rank over Holmes lol. The list has NO order. Just names I rank over Holmes with out a 2nd though, I added ten more which makes 40 just to prove imo that Holmes is not a top 30 pfp.
As you see i would rate Holmes over a lot of those guys you have although, you did leave some better fighters that you could have put up there to make a better argument.
Marciano nope Reason, clean out his era, and pretty much thrash the 50's. Had wins over hofers Walcott, Moore, and Charles 2 times. In his day, no one was on Marciano's level imo. Also gave rematchs when the first fight was close as show vs LarSarza and Charles. Dixion nope Rein as featherweight champ for almost 7 long years, One of the longest reins of that divison, Also beat the best of his day and was one of the best defenses ring masters of the day. Wins over McCarthry, Warren, Erne are what puts Dixion over Holmes on the who beats who imo. Dundee nope What?? He took over after the retirement of Leonard and pretty much fought evey around. The guy was pretty much swapping punchings with Leonard and evey one else once a week about. Thats more than Holmes imo. Harada Your kidding me right? This guy was on par with Armstrong and Fitz in weight jumpers imo. Outside of Jofre, the guy beat Medel, KingPetch(Who could also be argue over Holmes, Chiba and many others. He by all rights took the pound for pound title away from Jofre when he beat him 2 times. The guy was amazing. Having Holmes rank over Harada is not even a issue imo.
Battling Nelson nope Nelson beat Gans, and had that classic 40 plus bout with him. Nelson did burn out fast, but if you were fighting 40 plus bouts, you would also. Over all Nelson beat better fighters than Holmes. Joe Brown nope Brown had a long road, he is often the forgotting champion, but during his hayday he pretty much beat all the top contenders of his day if your name was not Ortiz. I belive he did more in his rein, than Holmes did in his so to speak. Ortiz not quite, pound for pound jumper, Wins over Kane, Brown, Busso, Ramos, and Torres should push him over Holmes easy. They were also better fighters than what Holmes had to face imo. Williams Beating Jack, Montomery, Galvian, Angott, and Salas are more than anything Holmes did in his run.
A long reign and consistency matters in that to achieve either you have to be able to win even when when everything works against you and you have to win on guts alone. Holmes beat everyone they put in front of him for 7 years on good days and bad getting up from monstrous knockdowns turning back younger fghters fighting the best fights of there lives. In contrast Lewis lost twice by KO .Tyson was unable to win when the sky started to run **** in Tokyo in 1990. Holyfield was very inconsistent. Wladimir Klitchko was KO'd three times . Since the reign of Holmes NOBODY has been able to stay on top for an unbroken reign.
I am very well aware of these guys resume and the others that i mentioned. Im not so much underrating these guys, its just that you have underrated Larry Holmes. Where do you rank him among hw and Pfp all time?
