should boxers be protected from themselves...?

having just watched a really sad video of james toney 'dissing' butterbean through a slurred two minute tirade of absolute bull****,i am more adamant than ever that boxers are always the last to know when their brains have become well and truly scrambled.the likes of toney,hearns,barkley,hopkins,holyfield,bowe and the old guard of ali,bugner,quarry etc etc tells you that there should be greater controls in place to stop these brave,but foolish men from fighting way beyond their sell by dates.it makes my heart sink when i hear these great warriors and once heroes making fools of themselves as they clearly have nothing else in their lives.the likes of toney,who was once an amusing,brash badass,will surely be a shuffling,completely incoherent wreck in 5 years time,and where will his fans be then?like so many before him,he'll be a forgotten loser,living in a twilight delusional world that could have been prevented if his so called advisers and hangers on had told him the truth-that his best years are ten plus years gone.no human being can absorb the kind of constant shellacking his head has taken during his career and come out unscathed.i sometimes feel ashamed that by watching this sport i am tarnished with the human suffering that is ultimately caused to the majority of its' participants,all for our entertainment

 

People are free to make money any way they choose.
You want coal miners or alaskan fisherman to quit their jobs because you're too worried about them? Boxing is one of thousands of deadly jobs.

 

the big difference is when a man's brain is damaged from so much trauma,he clearly is in self denial of the trouble he's in.when you see brits like honeyghan,kaylor and howard clarke completely ****ed up,you realise that these hard but too proud men need protection from themselves,surely...?

But who get's to decide who to protect? To me, if you go down this road you might as well prohibit all combat sports, all martial arts, all activities that require contact.

All these things have risks associated with them, and who are we to decide if those risks are unacceptable? As long as everything is fought on equal ground, there should be no holds barred!

 

men whose brains are as scrambled as toney et al are no longer capable of making decisions to protect themselves from sad,tragic consequences that await them down the line.some of these guys delude themselves that they are still contenders when they stopped being top level fighters many,many years ago.there must be some organisation which can detect early stages of pugilistic dementia,and enforce a halt to individuals' careers when the search for a payday and / or glory is outweighed by the catastrophic risk to the fighters' mental state.

 

i know what your saying and its sad to see but, they have passed medicals and are looking for the extra money.

i think they are old enough to choose their own managers ad advisers. one should be wise enough to listen to themselves and family when it comes to retirement

 

This is similar to my argument as to why Haye fans should be banned.

They are simply too brain damaged to realise how brain damaged they are.

 

You make a good point, but I guess the difference is that these boxers are doing it for our entertainment. So it kinda adds a disturbing element to it given that we keep cheering these guys on as they slowly get brain damage to give us fans a bit of thrill. But I guess logically its no greater responsibility as consumers of boxing as it is as consumers of seafood from alaskan fishermen or power derived from coal, it's just a bit more direct and obvious.

 

if a fighter has a nasty knockout, post fight CT scans are fairly common place for that very purpose. Your scrambled brains can be detected through regularly scheduled doctor's examinations. I'm pretty sure to be licensed it requires that very thing to show you're in good health. Not that commissions always play it straight.

 

I think Rushman should be banned. Just for being a useless ****.
