Are Chavez and Pacquiao on the same "tier"?

Yes.

 

On a side note, I get annoyed when people just assume Chavez would win in a match-up between the two, with the premise being that he's in another class. I like him over Pacquiao too (at most weights at least), but it's a match-up that needs thinking about.

Accomplishments wise I'd say yes, but I think Chavez is a tier above Pac when it comes to fighting ability.

Chavez would have beat him up badly too imo, most likely stopping him at 135-140.

 

Any weight really, I think it would be like the Taylor fight except Pacquaio does more damage. Chavez is very similar to MAB and very left orientated, if you look at Pacquaio he tends to do better against left orientated fighters (MAB/Hatton/Cotto/Delahoya) and worse against guys with very good rights (Marquez/Morales). Thats why Mayweather should spear him with the right. Chavez has a good right but I don't think its that good to beat Pac

I agree. I don't get this consensus that Chavez beats him. I generally think the person who will beat Pacquiao, is either a a pressure fighter or slickster. Whilst Chavez was great at applying pressure, I don't think he had the nessecary foot movement. Pacquiao could make him look slow all night.

I rate Paquaio ahead of Chavez too, but there's the longevity, which Pacquiao doesn't have. I think he has the better names on his resume and achieved more, though.

 

Not sure I agree with a lot of this, to be honest. Pacquiao doesn't fight inside and flurry insanely like Taylor, for starters. If Chavez gets inside, he's dead meat. Also, Chavez had a wicked right hand for my money. Super-accurate, super-well-timed. It's arguably as good a tool as Mayweather's right. Definitely the best Pacquiao has faced at any weight.

For me it's a question of whether Pacquiao can keep Chavez from getting in with footwork and power.

 

Chavez was one of the greats at cutting off the ring, no question. Camacho had absolutely no success on the move.

Brawling selectively would be Pacquiao's game here.
