It seems that by July 1896 that Jeffries did not have a manager, so this seems to suggest that any tour http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...00--en-Logical-20--61-byDA---jeffries+-all---
In this thread? I already knew about the below: It seems there are perhaps as many as 25 un-reported fights for Jeffries. He also Ko'd somebody named Hank Loraine.
didnt know where else to post this...thought someone might be interested to see it... from a book of newspaper boxing reports... {click pic when it loads to make it larger} http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d100/dougm1970/DSCF1921.jpg
If he were around today he'd have been trained with the techniques of today, would have the diets and genetics of today's fighters, so of course he could mix it with them. If today's fighters were sent back to 1890 they'd be less well trained, less boxing knowledge etc, and so they'd do worse. It cuts both ways and you have to compare like with like.
Here is a very interesting article on Sullivan. His comments regarding Jackson are particularly interesting. I have always thought the colour line was nothing short of a marketing gimmick and i think this article supports that theory. It is a shame that the fight never came up, but i think it was more to do with timing and the attitudes of authorities as a whole. As the article says, it would ahve proved nothing anyway (as did Corbett- Sullivan) http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...n-Logical-20--441-byDA---griffin+fight-all---
http://cdnc.ucr.edu/cdnc/cgi-bin/cd...l-20--21-byDA---sullivan+mccormick-all---1905 It seems that Sullivan must have changed his tune regarding Jeffries. Because in 1905, he was calling Jeffries and he says that is the real reason Jeffries retired! It seems from the articles i have read tonight, that if nothing else, Sullivan could talk a fight with the best of them, even todays boys.
Good Lord, that is funny stuff, at the expense of the dullard Sullivan... who never did a "serpentine dance" or "hoochie coochie crouch" and kept himself erect "man style"... I'm tearing up with laughter...
I read quite a few of these articles by Sullivan last night. He certainly wasnt afraid to say what he wanted at the time and, despite some pretty bad racism which was probably just aimed at trash talking to the larger white audience (like when Tyson wanted to eat Lennox' kids), you cant help but laugh at a lot of what he wrote. I have to put him in Ali's league and probably even better as a publicity attractor. He would be absolutely massive today, even if news editors would change his public perception!
Sullivan was not just a knucklehead by any means. He was an inteligent man outside the ring and a much more complex character thn people realise.
I read the John L. & His America book. That, and other assorted quotes and columns attributed to him, lead me to believe he was pretty much a belligerent knucklehead... and a general doucheknozzle.
He could certainly come across that way. He was likeable when sober, but became a complete ar5ehole verry quickly when he had any alcohol in his system. He was never much trammeled by modesty at the best of times. Reading a wider selection of less sensationalised quotes a different picture emerges of an inteligent and cerebral man. He was essentialy a Jekey and Hyde character who turned into a monster when he was on the juice.
Apparently Sullivan also had a very sonorous voice, a great plus in the days before electronic amplification and communication. Corbett and Fitzsimmons were world class trash talkers, Johnson was pretty loquatious, Langford was a very genial conversationalist. Peter Jackson said what he meant in a very precise manner.
