Thought I would start a thread for a serious discussion on UFC/MMA...........that means no "UFC IS ****" posts. I taped UFC 116 on the weekend and watched it on sunday night. I will start with the things the impressed me. The production of the show was incredible. I didn't know who any of the fighters were but after every 5 minute promo I was looking forward to each fight. The commentary did a very good job in making the fights seem exciting and also explaining things a hardcore fan may not understand (i.e why a fighter was in a certain position). Also they were a young team. Nobody was over the age of 50 in the announce team, which when you compare to Jim Watt and Ian Darke, or Jim Lampley, Larry Mechant and Manny Steward all of whom are 60+. Every time I watch Merchant i worry hes about to have a fall. They were dressed smart but not overly dress like the boxing guys who seem to be in tuxedos for every big event. When the fighters came out the music was pumping and the atmosphere was better than I have seen for any Las Vegas boxing event in some time. When something big happend in a fight the crowd went wild. The place was a sell out. Everyone was in there sits from the first fight of the night to the main event. There were sponsers everywhere in the arena and on the tv broadcast. The undercard fights all seems to be competative fights that could go either way. And there were fans of the undercard fighters all in the audience. Now for the negatives. The actual fighting was woeful. They were calling the fight the biggest in UFC history. It took 1 minute for a punch to even be thrown. The guy Lesner was fighting pretty much had a padded record. He had never been beyond 1 round in his whole career and as soon as he couldn't stop Lesner he was completley shatterd and got stopped mainly due to exhaustion. Brock Lesner who is the "Undisputed HW champion" really wins due to the fact he is a better ahtlete and just so much bigger than everyone else. In terms of actual skill he seems quite limited and get buy on the fact he makes the most money so he can afford the best trainers. The main event was also a fight between the Heavyweight Champion and the interim Heavyweight Champion.........sound familiar. Isnt this part of the problem with boxing. The fact that UFC had to put together a unification fight to make a mega event shows that the boxing multi world champions angle does build bigger fights. They also failed to mention two guys called Fabrico Werdum and Fedor who even in my limited knowledge of the sport, know to be the top Heavyweight in MMA. It seems the UFC just doesnt even acknowledge these guys. In terms of UK broadcasting, the fight was tucked away on ESPN which has a limtied number of subscribers. There was no coverage of the event build as the biggest in history in UK papers or TV. I highly doubt this would be the same for Pacquao vs Mayweather. I think Boxing can take a lot from the UFC in how it gets young people to watch its shows and go to the events, create a buzz around its fighters. But in terms of failing to make the biggest fights, padding fighters records UFC/MMA has put itself in the exact same position as Boxing. And as for in ring action, Boxing takes it every time.
I find it very boring usually. Sometimes you see a good fight but there's too much rolling around on the floor sweating all over each other to make it enjoyable. And the sport irritates me because absolutely anyone can get in a cage these days, pretend they're some sort of hard man and get paid for it as well. I like Bernard Hopkins opinion on it [yt]SDRkTr15gZs[/yt]
Poor Rob. I've watched a bit of MMA. Some of the guys are very talented. It's tactically interesting and, if you like martial arts, it's fascinating how they combine techniques on the fly to better an opponent. Unless one guys has a good ground game and the other doesn't. Because then the fight's over as soon as it goes to the mat. Probably the biggest difference is the structure of the sport - since UFC owns its fighters contracts they have to a) make for entertaining fights or not get featured, b) look for the best fights since the org mandates it or you don't get to fight but c) the purses are a lot less than in boxing's highest and d) if the fighters are part of two different orgs (Strikeforce and UFC), then the chances of them meeting are unlikely. So it has pluses and some of the same minuses as boxing. But the standard of presentation, the commitment to promoting upcoming fights and building fights is much better. Plus the best really want to fight the best because it's the only way they can progress. For me though, it's a godawful sport to watch. The mauling and wrestling is just tedious. plus the stand-up portion is usually like watching two drunks swing and miss.
The best thing about it is that the best people actually face each other, rather than the ''let's wait until it's bigger'' bollocks.
i agree that boxing can learn from UFC in the way it delivers shows etc. But we have to remember boxing is a pugilistic art-form and we can't go to far away from the gentleman side of the sport BUT i agree i'd like to see more youth and enthusiasm in the commentary teams. HBO have reintroduced Roy Jones which is a fantastic move. UFC is a company and not a sport so it's a lot easier for them to do what they do. I like to see the major tv networks work hard with the promotional companies in boxing to market fights better. As for the fighting i felt it was enjoyable evening but i'm a purist but can enjoy the nitty gritty. But it wasn't great to watch skills wise. Lesnar did great to win the fight after a terrible start. Personally i think he was **** scared of being hit by Carwin and panicked because he wasn't used to being hit by a man his own size. Carwin's a nice guy and has hard hands but his stamina is awful. UFC major problem is Dana White...and UFC's biggest assest is Dana White. The guy can make and break that company imo. Boxing can learn from UFC and UFC likewise.
i agree both sports can learn from each other, i know top rank are trying to rob alot of ideas about marketing and packaging of their product from the ufc.the one thing i think boxing has over mma is the announce team in mma they seem to try and bull**** alot.everyone apparently has worldclass skills at least in boxing the announcers don't bull****
:deal the amount of times i've heard Rogan try that bollocks. He very insightful at times because i'm a casual fan..i dunno what them holds are and he explains well but at times he try to hard to make out a guy world class. Goldberg since i started reading the mma forum...he is clueless and annoying. He like a cheerleader. And also UFC's MC is ****ing woeful...''IT'S TIME!!!!!!!!!'' that's on par with Mark Burdiss and his butlins ''Are you Ready!!!!!!!''
I'm no MMA fan but I don't agree with all this **** about the best facing the best and everything. UFC is like if GBP broke away and only made in house fights. If they stopped dealing with other promoters and the only you'd fight on their show is by signing on with them, for **** money. They don't even recognise the other MMA organisations. People tell us why is Pacquiao-Mayweather not getting made? Well, why did Brock Lesnar-Fedor not get made? Tell me that. And UFC hype every fight up, they try and make it all sound like it's awesome. To their credit though, from what I've seen, they put on the competitive undercard fights. None of that 15-0 prospect versus 15-47-2 journeyman type stuff.
I agree with you until you said now for the negatives, then you started making numerous mistakes. I'm a huge fan of MMA. They have been shitting on boxing for a while. Their structure ensure good match ups but also the guys come to fight for bonuses etc
Yep good up until the negatives where there is a lot of mistakes. They do the exact same with WEC which i have started watching more and more of in the past 2 years they always have great cards from top to bottom. They are owned by the same people as the UFC without Dana fronting the company but are just as good. The thing the UFC do best is make the casuals think UFC is MMA and thats all their is too it. Out of all my mates only one knows Fedor or any other orginisation in MMA. You never hear them talk about any other orginisation except maybe WEC if their is a card coming up.
