Good post Rob. I watch a lot of MMA and you have picked up most of the good and bad from your first viewing.

Last November I managed to talk my missus into a holiday that started in Vegas for Pac-Cotto, went to Hawaii for a week then back to Vegas for UFC at the Mandalay Bay.

Just to correct a couple of minor points:

    1) Carwin was not unproven - he had beaten a few legit contenders - he just happens to have such heavy hands that he didn't get past the 1st. Note also that usually (not always) MMA fighters will have less 'learning/padding fights'. 12-0 is not neccessarily a novice.

    2) Yes this was an 'interim/unification' of sorts but that is because the champ Brock was seriously injured. It is not the norm at all to need this angle to build a fight - in fact the interim angle was a bit of an embarressment to all concerned (incl Carwin). There would likely not have been a single additional PPV if there was never an interim belt.

    3) Yes the UFC broadcast team don't go out of their way to advertise other organisations but they do refer to them now and again and do not pretend they don't exist. Rogan referred at the weekend to the death of Elite XC and they have mentioned Fedor before. It seems to me that it is only now that Fedor has been beaten (last week) that the UFC guys refer to the UFC Heavyweight champ as the baddest man on the planet etc. Prior to that, Fedor was the elephant in the room.

    4) UK media - yes it was on ESPN but Sky have a contract with WWE which forbids them from showing UFC. Sky and Dana White also had a falling out back in 2002 over the production of the Albert Hall bill. Dana holds grudges. For completeness, the Daily Telegraph boxing guy (Gareth Davies) does report on MMA, as does the Daily Star....

This. Carwins win over Mir was super impressive.

Pisses all over Edwin Valero's 'perfect' record with that one fight.

Yeah both Mir and Gonzaga are top fighters at Heavy, I look forward to seeing Carwin in with Cain or JDS in the future. I wouldn't mind seeing him KO Kongo either.

I'm not going to pretend to know anything about MMA/UFC but I have tried. I have sat up until 3am to watch these UFC75 shows and all that. I've sat down with slight hope that I will be sucked into this bubble but after about three minutes I am absolutely bored.
The whole set-up still reminds me of wrestling. And when they get on the floor I have no interest in 'ground work' whatsoever. I do not see the excitement, I do not see the artistry and I don't see the drama. It's never made me want to go back for more.
Boxing got me interested in the personalities, the grudges, the events and the history. Boxing has created a bible for itself. Crammed with characters that will stand the test of time. Even today, Mayweather and Pacquiao will be talked about in 20 years time. When we will still be talking about Hagler and Hearns etc.
MMA/UFC will never create a Sugar Ray Robinson, Jack Johnson, Jake LaMotta, Sugar Ray Leonard, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frasier, George Foreman etc etc. MMA/UFC will never have an event with the political and racial backdrops of Joe Louis v Max Schmelling. They will never hold an event that will grip the world the way that Ali v Frazier and Ali v Foreman did. I'm not going to say this is a good thing but there were sharpshooters in the arena when Cooney fought Holmes thanks to some distasteful promotional work. Certain people were at breaking point for that fight, people were hooked on the event. You'll never get that in the other sport.
Boxing has created a storybook that can be read over and over. Everlasting images, words and overall memories that some sports apart from the MMA/UFC can't even match.

I don't watch MMA/UFC but a load of my mates do ans say I should watch it, so MMA/UFC fans recommend me some decent fights to watch and I'll make an effort to sit through all suggestions if available.

soembody recomended me a fight to watch saying it was "the ultimate stand up fight". made out it was proper brutal like a Gatti Ward of MMA.

I checked it out and it was bull****. had seen cleaner punches outside oceana.

its not the first time i have watched it. have never really gone into it. tbh i am not really gonna bother again.

    1) So Carwin is a proven Heavyweight but he cannot go 1 round without completley gassing. My opinion of MMA has always been the strongest guy wins and its not about skill, this just strentghend the theory.

    2) So the title should have been vacated. UFC has done well in positioning itself as different to boxing with no multi champion bull****. Not only do you have strikeforce and ufc, within the organisations they have 2 champions. Its the same bull****.

    3) This is something you cannot accuse boxing of doing. I heard no mention of Fedor and they kept saying these are the best two heavyweights in MMA not UFC??

    4) How do you think UFC would do on sky??

I watched the last couple of shows (no homo), and the last one was pretty decent. the Akiyama fight was entertaining, but I just hate all the rolling around on the ground - especially if it lasts for an entire 5 minute round :tired

so tell me more about this Fedor guy and the geezer who beat him. Why is he avoided.

Is Brock Lesner the cash cow in UFC? Selling the most PPV's and they need him to continue winning?
