I think he lost to McGuigan didn't he? Haven't really heard or seen much of him apart from that fight.

The BT Express was a great amateur. His record is listed as 481-8. He was denied a chance at Olympic glory due to the US boycott of the '80 olympics. He did draw with Pedroza in a title fight. Kind of a disputed decision, Taylor moved (ran) a lot, and it wasn't one of Pedroza's better efforts. Taylor got a shot against McGuigan also. I've never seen that fight in it's entirety, but was impressed that McGuigan was able to track Taylor down and stop him in 8. Taylor had a very solid Pro career and was a favorite on ESPN for awhile in the 80's. He was a terrific boxer but didn't have much power.

I was at the mcGuigan-Taylor fight and its fair to say that Taylor gave mcGuigan problems for the first 5 rounds with his slick 'jab and move' gameplan. No doubt he was ahead but you could sense McGuigan was catching up with him and he hit Taylor with a right hand to the body in the 7th round which drained him visibly and was felt by all in the kings hall. The fight was over in the next round and ironically Taylor claimed at the time that the heat was immense and hard to stick. I think Boza-Edwards and charlie 'choo choo' brown were on the same bill but im not 100%

I thought that one of McGuigan's body punches was going to break Taylor in half at one point. Taylor did well early on in that fight, but his excuse about the heat did n't wash with me. Autumnal Ireland is not known for hot weather...!

Hey, thanks for that report! My local TV station decided to air a college football game instead of the fight. I've never seen it (other than a short highlight on Youtube). Bit after the difficulty Taylor gave Pedroza, I had to assume it was a very good effort by Barry.

He has a brilliant amateur record by anyone's standards, might have to have a look into some of his pro fights.

And yeah.....your best not going anywhere near the general forums if you want any decent replies! :good

If you landed on earth and looked at the general forum you'd think joe calzaghe was GOAT !

And i know its a off topic thing but you's dont happen to know anything about Baby Jake Matlala , beat michael carbajal round about 97 ?

ive tried my best to watch most his fights since i was only a bairn when the actual fight took place (i'm 21 now) any other info would be welcomed!

Great Amateur who probably would've won in the 1980 Olympics if not for the boycott. One of the fastest fighters in the world in his heydey, however, didn't really fight a lot of top notch competition, which hurt him in his career, which was still respectable.Won the NABF featherweight and USBA Junior Lightweight, beating Calvin Grove on a come from behind victory.

taylor actually was doing well early with his sticking and moving, then after Mcguigan had a couple of better rounds and landed some good punches he quit on his stool and blamed the heat in the arena.

    Really gutless performance imo.

PRime Bernard Taylor is one of the fastest fighters ive seen. He was giving Barry a boxing lesson until getting worn out and broke down from Mcguigan. I thin he also blamed it on Jet lag and deydration.

Lot of people though Taylor edged Pedroza. Its been a long time since ive seen that fight. Taylor had one of the best amatuer records, i wonder if he suffered from burnout after almost 500 amatuer fights. I also remember losing to an up and coming Hector Lopez at the forum and then he won a few good fights before getting stopped by John John Molina and retiring.

He was slick sometimes he would stand in front of you and other times hed get on his bike, his streght was his speed demon like counterpunches.
He is one of my earliest memorys of regular Espn fighter.

Good news, bad news. I was able to find some Bernard Taylor footage. Unfortunately for Taylor it's probably the worst butt whipping he took in his career. This is the full Taylor - McGuigan fight. The clips aren't labeled but I think this is in order.
