Jersey Joe Walcott knocks out a modern superheavyweight

I met Joe Walcott when he was in his 60's and although I met many Heavyweight Champs and Contenders from Ali to Jack Dempsey. there were a few that really impressed me with there freakish size. JJW and Joe Frazier with the size of the head neck and with of shoulders and Jack Dempsey as an old man the strength of his hands and arms. Walcott was a muscular solid man at 60 and he had ring smarts and power.....he is my ATG spoiler heavyweight.

Archie Moore once commented in an interview of the great physical strength of Jack Dempsey...it was a surprising admission coming from Moore IMO, but he was quite emphatic in making his point about the great strength of Dempsey, esprecially since Dempsey wasn't a big heavyweight.

 

I love that scene where Walcott decks the giant...I don't usually believe in most fightscenes in boxing movies, but that one looked real.

 

It shows us all how much times have changed........ Toro Moreno never saw a dime until the very end of the movie when Bogie gives him his take...... A mere $26,000 dollars to go back to Argentina with...... Even by 1950s standards, that's cheesy....... CHRIST!

Do you think Primo Carnera was left with more than that ,after the Mob abandoned him ?

 

****, NO! But I heard that Carnera did make some nice cabbage later on as a wrestler.......

I saw Carnera in some early 50s flick playing a fighter... It was on TCM a few weeks ago.... I can't recall the film, but If I check the wiki on Primo I'm sure I can figure it out....... Carnera was well into his 40s when he did the film, but he was still buffed........

I love this film but like all great boxing storys that make it into mainstream it also hurt boxing. bud schulberg got a bit carried away, the punchline was boxing was so crooked as long as somebody looked the part and sold tickets "they" will make sure he keeps winning even if he has zero talent.

Its only partly true. Carneras standing as a champion took quite a knock over this story even though it aplys as evenly to most champions.

Schulberg himself wrote an article about managing archie mcbride a heavyweight whos career he financed with what he made from "the harder they fall". he gave him the best matcmaking, training camps, he even sold some of the contract to "them" to break new york but he found the whole experience much harder than he thought.
