Back muscle

    How important is the upper back (lats) in a boxer's physique. Bruce Lee had monster lats and says that is where alot of his power came from. I have been giving alot of attention to my upperback in training (as well as training every other muscle)....is training the upperback and having a good set of lats a good thing or am I wasting time?

    I've been wondering the same thing..
    I think most muscles will have benefits as long as they're not built to an extent where they're too bulky and slowing you down.

    I can't really think of anything in particular they'd be great at though but i'm no expert so i can't really judge, hopefully somebody more knowledgeable will reply because i'm interested in knowing the benefits also

    Big strong back = a very powerful person, whatever the sport.

    So the lats in particular? or the whole back (delts,traps, etc)?

    That is partly true in my opinion a strong back cant harm but strength doesnt always come with size especially in the ring, huge lats are going to get in the way and interfier with technique and dont guarantee strength that will transfer through to boxing, infact big lats dont even guarantee strength in the weight room, it depends on how your training, i know bodybuilders with huge lats that cant really row a great deal, i used to lift for mass for 4 years until i stopped for boxing and i can honestly say in my own experience big lats didnt make a bit of difference in terms of strength or being able to hit harder, infact id go as far as saying that i think they slow things down quite a bit, maybe because of a lack of flexibility im not quite sure, but it definently makes you less flexible unless you stretch religously.

    There is no point in making any muscle TOO big in boxing. Bodybuilding muscles = useless in my opinion....but Bruce Lee had a big and immensly strong back.

    everyone makes it sound so easy to get huge muscles from lifting weights..for ur muscles to be so big they slow u done u have to be ridiculously big and most likely on steroids. the fact is people lose focus on their speed and boxing training when they start weight training and that is why they become slower.

    edit: remember there is a difference between strength and size. olympic weightlifters lift huge huge weights and dont have the mass to show it, whereas bodybuilders have the size but not the always the strength

    Good example there, true stuff. Going back to my example, Bruce Lee had monster lats which he built but they were compact and strong, he also trained his fighting technique for 2 and a half hours per day.

    u really think so? do u realise how hard it is to gain hundreds of lbs of lean muscle? it takes years of strict diet and specific workouts and it wouldnt even be possible while doing boxing training and cardio.

    i wasnt very clear..its about fast vs slow twitch fibres and if u train purely fast twitch by doing cleans and explosive movements u arent going to get big. if u train slow twitch like bodybuilders ur most likely doing high reps, isolation exercises and your not being specific to boxing thus u will get big and slow down.

    Um, fast twitch muscle fibres have the highest growth potential. Look at the olympic lifter above, he trains explosive movements a lot...

    Olympic lifts are amazing at building muscle, they are all explosive.

    yeh but they dont get huge like bodybuilders..if they combined this type of lifting with cardio and boxing training they wouldnt be big at all
