Interbox announced Thursday that Montreals Lucian Bute (26-0, 21 KOs) will put his International Boxing Federation super-middleweight title on the line on Friday, Oct. 15 at the Bell Centre against top contender Jesse Brinkley of the United States (35-5, 22 KOs). Romanian-born left-handed IBF super middleweight (168 pounds) champion Lucian Bute will make a mandatory sixth defense of his crown against Las Vegas resident Jesse Brinkley on Oct. 15 at Bell Centre in Montreal. The bout indefinitely delays potential plans for a fall mega bout between Bute and multi-world champion Bernard Hopkins, said Golden Boy Promotions' CEO, Richard Schaefer. Schaefer said last month that he had talked with Interbox Promotions CEO Jean Bedard, which promotes Bute. "We spoke about the possibility of putting together a fight with Bernard Hopkins," Schaefer said. "And they would be open to doing a fight between Bute and Hopkins. The fight would be sometime between September and November." "They hadn't gotten back to me, so yes, I guess that they're going to go ahead and do their mandatory. So Bute is going to fight Brinkley, and we'll see what's going to be happening with Bernard," Schaefer said. Further delaying a potential Bute-Hopkins bout is the fact that if Bute defeats Brinkley, as expected, he could then be in line to make a defense against the winner of a July 31 IBF eliminator bout between Australia's Sakio Bika (28-3-2, 19 KOs) and Jean Paul Mendy (28-0-1, 16 KOs) of France. Bika has won six straight fights, four of them by knockout, since losing by a lopsided unanimous decision to Bute in June 2007. Schaefer is adding Bika-Mendy to an already deep July 31st HBO pay-per-view card whose main event features WBO and WBA lightweight (135 pounds) champion Juan Manuel Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KOs) against Juan Diaz (35-3, 17 KOs) in a rematch of Marquez's February 2009 ninth-round knockout that earned Fight of the Year. "We won the purse bid for Bika versus Mendy for the mandatory title, and the winner would become the mandatory to face Bute. So we're going to add that to the July 31 card, because it's supposed to be a helluva fight," Schaefer said. "I'm negotiating with the pay-per-view to see if we can get an extra hour before the pay-per-view starts to give a free lead-in for fight fans so that they can see that world title eliminator."

Talks are ongoing for the fight to get televised by ESPN as part of the Friday Night Fights series. I've been told that InterBox, who promote Bute, are very interested in placing super middleweight contenders Kelly Pavlik and Librado Andrade in separate fights on the undercard. There is a decent shot for Andrade, a popular fighter among Canadian fans, to land on the card. Pavlik is doubtful to fight on the show. InterBox would like to get him on board to further build a future fight with Bute, but the price of getting Pavlik involved on the card is too expensive. A source close to the negotiations told Boxing***** that Pavlik's minimum is too high to make him a realistic possibility for the card.
Cool. Should be a decent fight. Brinkley has been hot of late, but yea I like Bute by stoppage. Bute is too powerful, too quick, and just too good.
Christ Jesse Brinkley lost to Robin Reid and at that time Robin Reid was absolutely shot to pieces... I don't blame Bute Brinkley is his mandatory, but this fight does nothing for me.
Well, I was just talking about his last 8 fights after he lost to Robin Reid. He has looked good in all of them except his fight against....Pachell I think? Not sure but the fight before Stevens he fought at LHW he didn't look good, but other than that he has looked pretty good. Like I said I don't think he has much of a chance against Bute, but still I kind of like the fight.
It doesn't but what he's gonna do...? It's not like he has a big fight signed... and if he doesn't fight Brinkley he'll lose the belt.The belt that make's him attractive for the S6 winner. He has no reason the drop the belt.With Hopkins are just talks and rumors , Pavlik doesn't seems to want a fight with him , Stieglitz doesn't even want to hear about it , Bika will probably be his next mandatory anyway , 6 fighters are locked in the S6 tournament , Dawson is busy with Pascal. :bart
Brinkley seems to have improved quite a bit since the Reid fight. He looked pretty good against Stevens in his last fight. He actually fought Stevens to beat him. Unlike Dirrell who ran like a ***** (think Froch-Dirrell x10). Don't get me wrong. Brinkley is nowhere near Bute's level and that fight is a huge waste of time. But it's necessary at this point for Bute to keep his title. I just wish they could have made that fight in July like it was suppose to.
Exactly :good On a sidenote he also won by TKO over Otis Griffin. That's a good win as well. He's still miles away from being a threat to Bute by the way.
