Hearns Wanted Tyson In 1989?

I remember the talk about Hearns maybe going to heavyweight, but the Tyson stuff was never taken seriously. Hearns might have wanted it, he seemed to carry a need to prove himself and he still calls people out to this day ! But the fight would never have been taken seriously - or allowed - by other parties.

 

Hearns MAYBE makes it into the second round.

Big fan of Tommy, but the man would not have lasted.

 

I'm not even sure if TEN Thomas Hearns' beat one Mike Tyson, let alone one.

 

Okay, as crazy as this fight seems nowadays, were these guys really as far apart as we all think, just because Hearns fought at a lighter weight? Okay i know Tyson is a bad example and i agree with the KO1 predicions, but:

Surely Hearns was better than some of the guys that Tyson fought during his career? A Boxrec scan of Hearns shows that in 1999, Hearns fought Nate Miller. Nate Miller had just come off a unanimous decision loss to Orlin Norris which was only by a point or so. Nate had previously beaten Bert Cooper and Dwight Muhammed Quawi also, so he was not a bad heavyweight as Cooper was a Holyfield opponent (gave him major troubles) and Qawi fought Foreman and as we know gave a cruiserweight holyfield major troubles.

Nate was a good win for Hearns. It places him (when old and overweight) about the Orlin Norris level as they both did equally as good against Nate. Amazingly, Orlin Norris fought at this time, none other than Mike Tyson. This was in 1999 (okay it didnt fare that well). So, realistically, Hearns wouldnt have been a bad opponent for Tyson as he was always fighting guys this level. As (I might add) were Tucker, Golota, Vitali etc. In the case of Tucker, he actually split fights with Norris. Wow, when you think about it maybe Hearns new something when he saw Tucker "trouble" Tyson and thought he could too. If an ancient out of shape hearns can compete at roughly Norris level, surely a prime in shape hearns could compete at better than this level, and by association of results be every bit as good a challenger as many fighters in the last 20 years,who have tried and failed to win world heavyweight championships?

 

Tommy got run over by Hagler (but gave a great effort of course). I don't recall any serious discussion about this fight.

 

true...tyson didn't have hagler's warrior mentality (who did?) or hagler's skills.

 

thanks. I have some vague recollection of Tommy being mentioned as an opponent. In a early 1990 issue of boxing illustrated, Tommy is lampooned as a fute Tyson opponent

 

If this was in the general forum, someone would call Douglas a bum and say if he can do it in 1990, then a bulked-up Hearns could get at least a decision.

 

I love the Hitman but this fight would be a total destruction of Hearns! Tommy could not keep Mike off and once Tyson tagged him tommy would bang and it would be lights out!!
