I don't care how Lundy was acting before or doing the fight. The stoppage was **** poor one of the worst I've seen in years. This fight was taken away from Lundy not beaten out of him, BIG DIFFERENCE.
Agreed. I am shocked that Lundy didn't have the power to hurt or drop Molina. Molina is so hittable I didn't see any way that Lundy could lose this fight. I guess I totally overrated Lundy's punching ability. Looks like Lundy's defense is hurting, too.
I think this is kind of like the Andy Lee stoppage. I think the ref knew when he was holding the rope that there was something wrong and had made up his mind he would stop it at the next solid punch. Not a bad thing to do at this level.
But Lundy was the "house fighter." He is promoted by Rhode Island's Jimmy Burchfield. That's why the fight took place in Rhode Island: it is literally Lundy's second hometown. So, I'm not convinced the ref was quick to screw Lundy.
Lee was hurt much more than people realize. The ref was being pressured by ringside officials to stop it; even Manny Steward was getting ready to pull the plug on his guy. TV viewers could not notice these details, however.
The loudmouth RJJ wannabe would have been KTFO if the ref hadn't stepped in and saved his head. The ref stopped it cause a) Lundy is a dumb ass holding the ropes with his gloves b) was clearly slumped by Molina's punches. When you get slumped like that, its possible that you are just about to lose consciousness. Good, protective stoppage. And, I love when loudmouths get to eat their words.
If Lundy would have went down and came back up wobbly or badley hurt then I would have no problem with the stoppage. That ref is either inexperience or that was a mistake on his part. Even Teddy Atlas said it was stopped too soon.
Someone, at the time of the fight that was present, said he could see Lee's eyes roll up. At this stage of their careers, I don't think a quick stoppage is all that bad. They are young and have time to recover and will do so much better than if they take a beating. Lundy was getting worn down and had just been buckled. There was only one way this fight was going to end.
Yet Atlas had no problem with it, and saw that the ref stopped the fight because he saw Lundy slumping/dropping his head and hands, following Molina's shots. Its not an unusual stoppage at all.
Lundy was also getting desperate to the point that he was in real danger of making some very dangerous mistakes. Maybe something even worse than holding on to the ropes. The ref could have let it go a bit longer, but the stoppage was inevitable from the 7th round on.
