Anthony Mundine v Gerrard Zohs - Entertainment Centre, Sydney, New South Wales.

Mundine’s debut, at age 25, and after a rugby career and limited amateur boxing career (at age 17), ends in a KO win in round 4 of 8.

The ensuing 10 years have been nothing if not interesting.

A brilliantly gifted athlete destined to be remembered as one of the biggest enigmas of Australian boxing.

(20 years ago - and a local one)

    Ivan Rukavina
v Fred Toleafoa - Norwood Australian Rules Club, Adelaide, Sth Aust.

Rukavina won the vacant Australasian light heavyweight title, having won the Australian title in his previous bout.

For Kiwi Toleafoa it would be the end of the line, and for Croatian born Victorian Rukavina, the peak that gave him the momentum to take on the USA.

    Alfredo Escalera
v Kuniaki Shibata - Kasamatsu Park Gym, Mito, Ibaragi, Japan.

Escalera wins the WBC super featherweight title by KO in round 2 of 15.

Puerto Rican Escalera would make 10 successfully defences before falling to Arguello.

Birthdate of the great Jimmy Carrothers.

Carruthers turned pro in 1950, and was an immediate success. He won the Australian bantamweight title in 1951, and the World and British Commonwealth titles in late 1952, via a first round demolision of reigning champion, South African Vic Toweel.

Carruthers became Australia's first universally recognised boxing World Champion, and would initially retire undefeated.

Sadly, and due to his need for money to finance a hotel he wanted to purchase, Currothers proceeded with a comeback. The 7 years layoff proved too big an obstacle and Carrothers lost 4 of 6 comeback fights.

Carrothers went on to became a prominent referee, and passed away in 1990 at age 61.

Jorge Arce v Yosam Choi - Olympic Fencing Gymnasium, Seoul, South Korea.

Mexican Arce wins WBC junior flyweight title by KO in round 6 of 12. Arce had won the interim version of the same title a couple of bouts earlier.

Arce is best know to Australia as a Vic Darchinyan opponent (Vic by stoppage in 11) a year or two back.

Jesse James Leija v Hector Camacho Jr. - Coney Island, New York, USA.

Official result is NC in round 5 of 10.

Camacho quit after being cut above the eye from a head clash that didn’t seem too serious and was probably as much his fault as it was Leija's. The cut wasn’t bad enough for the ringside doctor to call for a stoppage, but Camacho insisted his vision was blurred and wanted the fight ended.

This bout occured a couple of years prior to Leija's unsuccessful challenge for Kosta Tszyu's titles held in Melbourne.

Cory Spinks v Roman Karmazin - Savvis Center, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA.

Spinks wins IBF super welterweight / light middleweight with narrow PTS win over 12 rounds.

Spinks has since lost and regained the same IBF title. Having lost 3 of his last 6 and holding a title, could he be a future Mundine target?

Dave Sands v Jim Woods – Wagga Wagga, NSW.

Sadly, Aussie legend Dave Sands’ last ever bout.

A natural middleweight, Sands again proving his remarkable talent, giving away 20 pounds and winning the Australian heavyweight title.

Sands would be tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident on the 11th August, about a month after this bout.

Birth date of Giacobe LaMotta, better know as Jake 'Raging Bull' LaMotta.

As a child LaMotta was forced by his father to fight other children for the entertainment of the neighborhood, who threw change into the ring. LaMotta's father would collect up the money and use it towards the rent.

LaMotta won the world title in 1949 in Detroit against Frenchman Marcel Cerdan.

LaMotta was recognized as having one of the best chins in boxing, and was the first man to beat the great Sugar Ray Robinson. But his career would also include much controversy, such as the fight fix against Billy Fox.

Hollywood director Martin Scorsese thought enough of LaMotta colourful and illustrious career to engage Robert De Niro (himself in Australia just recently filming) to portray LaMotta in the 1970 movie 'Raging Bull: My Story'.

Jeff Fenech v Greg Richardson - Entertainment Centre, Sydney, NSW.

Fenech retains his WBC super-bantamweight title by KO in round 5 of 12.

1987 was a typically productive year for Fenech with 5 wins from 5 starts, and only the bout against Tony 'Mad Dog' Miller going the distance.

    Joseph Agbeko
v Vic Darchinyan - Bank Atlantic Center, Sunrise, Florida, USA.

'King Kong' Agbeko retains his IBF Bantamweight Title by UD over 12 rounds.

Vic's first attempt at adding a bantamweight world title to his fly and super flyweight titles proves unsuccessful. Three fights later though he would add an IBO bantamweight title to his swelling belt collection.

Birth date of former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks.

Leon Spinks would win his world title from none-other-than the great Muhammad Ali, and when brother Michael won the heavyweight title from Larry Holmes, they became the first set of brothers to achieve the feat.

This feat has since also been achieved by the Klitschko brothers, Vitali & Wladimir.

    Barry Michael
v Lester Ellis - Festival Hall, Melbourne.

    This content is protected

Barry Michael survives a Gloria Marshall-like weight loss and 15 rounds of war with the 'Master' Blaster, and at the end of it is the new IBF super featherweight champion.

As you can see from the picture, the 3rd man in the ring that night was Gus Mercurio.

Was fortune to be at the 'House of Stoush' for this one, and can't believe it was 25 years ago!

One of the greatest Aust vs Aust battles in the Oz history. Even the old timers would dip their hats.
