Roys speed and timing were out of this world! Prime for prime Roy beats Joe, although I dont believe Roy would "destroy" him like some claim, NOBODY is going to just batter calzaghe. RJJ points by 4 rnds.. Im gonna go watch rjj vs Vinny Paz again!
RJJ caught Calslappy good when he wasn't in his prime and almost Koed him. A prime RJJ finsishes him off that 1st round.
Jones fought in a very weak era, so did Calzaghe for most of it, Calz is ATG for toughness and stamina though, he doesnt get phased or put off his stride, good chin too, Jones might knock him down once or twice but he would swarm him and it would be a very close fight. Calzaghe was definitely the best fighter Jones never faced in his prime IMO, I think Jones would have sneaked a close decision
Just a point, that if Jones was so shot, he was favourite to win first and second time against Tarver and against Johnson. He beat undefeated Hanshaw and many favoured him to beat Calzaghe. He was still in the Ring top 10 when Joe beat him, and some even picked him to beat the highly rated Hopkins recentley. You may say Jones suddenley became shot or it may have something to do with him not using ripped fuel. Either way Calzaghe beats him
Calzaghe was somewhat of a power puncher in his early career before he ****ed his hands up. He had everything. I wouldn't write him off in any fight.
jones style makes for amazing highlight reels. Prob the best of any fighter. Calzaghe's style doesnt. No one will know. I do think if anyone had the style to beat roy jones back then, it would have been calzaghe. Work rate, combinations, the chin. But they didn't fight, and despite both going unbeaten, Jones resume is alot better than calzaghe's, which is why he will always be tipped to beat him.
actually jones' resume isn't that much greater. but because he did beat toney and hopkins and calzaghe confined himself to being an 'obscure champion' jones will always be remembered as a much more accomplished champion. rightfully so.
Thats all you need sometime. A couple of wins that people remember like his ruiz fight. When people think Ali or SRL they think of a couple of fights. Calaghe was great but for me, he never had the career defining fight, that only few boxers have
Shouldn't we have the Roy who fought someone like Paz, Toney, or Brannon instead of the Roy who fought Telesco? More fair to have them at the same weight. Jones UD
