The winner of the super 6 would of trumped Calzaghe's career in little over 2 years?

lol u cud almost make the same argument for mayweather at light-welter and above NO ELITE PRIME FIGHTERS nobody gets all-time great status for fighting prime elite fighters in jus the beginning of their career, boxing doesnt work like that why a fighter th losses but wins aginst elite prime fighters is the fighter of the decade lolzz and im not a fan of calslappy, fakeweather or pacroid im a fan of boxing

I'm American, but for what it's worth:

You have to factor in dominance. Calzaghe dominated the division, then went up a weight and still became champ. He was never beaten, and he held a title for something like 11 years.

The winner of the Super Six will have more big-name fights on his resume, but think of it this way: it's a tournament. A few of the guys in it will probably fight each other after it's over. It wouldn't be surprising if we see some 2 or 3 fight series, with each fighter losing some. Sure, it's a great resume, but it isn't DOMINANCE. When Calzaghe was active, you knew he was the best in the division, hands down. The same won't be said of the Super Six winner unless he goes through it undefeated and then beats Bute, and then cleans out the division (unifying the titles), and then moves up in weight and to the top of the LHW division.

And that's just resume. You still have to figure in head-to-head if you're talking ATG status, and Calzaghe's style was such that I strongly doubt we'll ever see a consensus that he would be beaten prime-for-prime by the super six winner, whoever it is.

i dont like calzaghe at all.

but there is no doubt he is the best smw to date, and i dont think one tourney changes that immediately. calz was at the top for a decade and made 20+ defences.

if say froch won the s6, and avenged his defeat to kessler on the way, he would have the best resume in that tournament by miles, but he still wont have achieved what joe did, as much as it pains me to say that

They are all a class above the fighters you mentioned. Comparing Calzaghe to Hagler and Monzon destroys your credibility. SMW was like a minor league division for most of Joe's "reign".

    Why?

I honestly don't even know how any sane person can say the Super Six winner won't have eclipsed Calzaghe, even a diehard Calzaghe fan.

The Super Six winner will have come off an intense series of fights with the very best the division has to offer, going in with the best one after another until he is the last man standing.

Joe Calzaghe beat Mikkel Kessler, Jeff Lacy, and a collection of mediocrities in over a decade.

    How is that even comparable?

Every fighter in the Six is better than Lacy, except maybe Green. Can't decide who is worse between those two clods.

The Super Six winner will have a better resume than Calzaghe, and will have done it the hardest way imaginable.

The winner (Kessler, Froch, Abraham, or Ward) will possibly have fought THREE, or maybe even TWO, of the current top SMWs. Dirrell and Green do not belong, and neither did Taylor. And the winner won't necessarily have won all those fights either.

Abraham wins: he has a loss to Dirrell, and 3-4 wins total, one of them over Taylor (and can still win if he loses to Froch).

Froch wins: has a loss to Kessler, a controversial decision against Dirrell, and 3-4 wins total (and can still win if he loses to Abraham).

Kessler wins: has a one-sided loss to Ward, and 3-4 wins, one of them possibly over Green (and could still win if he loses to Green...I think).

Ward wins: has 4-5 wins, could still win if he loses to Dirrell. Could go undefeated.

Ward is pretty much the only one who has a chance to make a case for eclipsing Calzaghe within the tournament, and that's if he wins it all by going undefeated. If he does, he'll have 3 good wins on his resume (some combination of Kessler, Froch, and Abraham...possibly two wins against Kessler and a win against Froch or Abraham).

I'm not seeing how that equates to spending over ten years facing the best the division has to offer without losing a single fight, and then going up a class to take out the #3 P4P boxer and becoming the champ at 175. Not seeing it.

No, they need a little longevity to do that.
Abraham was a good 160 man, but not great, unproven at 168.
Froch, well, use your eyes, it doesn't get any more one dimensional.
    Green, please!
Dirrell, has a lot to do to compare to some of the guys Joe faced.
Ward, this guys got the goods, needs time to establish himself as great.
Kessler, good fighter but past the prime guy Calzaghe fought.

I've got the op on ignore because he's a ***** who knows little about the sport and I can't be arsed changing that.

    Interesting answers on here.

Dirrell will school Ward in their next fight so badly many will describe the asswhipping as "wizardlike". Dirrell will later go on to win the tourney(in the process beating both Ward and AA AGAIN). After that he will go to Montreal and whip the **** out of Bute(whos overrated as **** because he's been matched against decent fighters that pose NO style threat whatsoever). There now 168 has been cleared. After that Dirrell will move up to 175 and give a boxing lesson to Chad Dawson. And if Bhops feelin willy he can get shut down the same way Ward is about to be. Dirrell is on a different plane people

SMW is a newer division which has done little but dilute the quality of the other marquee divisions. During its short history it has been populated by regional fighters like Joe who consistently refuse difficult fights and unification opportunities. Top fighters have passed through SMW and won a title in one or two fights as there are so many sanctioning bodies and weight classes all they needed to do is pay a sanctioning fee. There is little doubt the winner of the super 6 will be remembered as a greater SMW than Joe.

I can't understand why the thread starter's points are being dismissed so quickly. I started a similar thread a while back, in which I tried to compare Froch's resume to Joe's resume by the time the tournament finishes:

    http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=218444&page=2

Almost all of the posters here admitted that if Froch was to go on and win the competition, he would have at least matched Calzaghe's CV.

The Calzaghe fans need to realize one important thing - the critics are not concerned with the length of reign over a weak super-middleweight division. No. When looking at an ATG, they want to see who this ATG has beaten! If Jeff Lacy and Kessler are your best wins, then it's really nothing to be bragging about.

no way what so ever, how long have you been following boxing? calzaghes reign isnt the best but it went on for a damn ten years. what you can say is that the winner of this tournament has faced better fighters in a shorter time period then joe but that doesnt mean they will be ranked higher atg status. get off it.

and the floyd maywetaher analogy, how in hell can you rank tim bradley atg above mayweather if tim beat cintron khan williams you damn fool

ok my take on it is like this....

They would have a better resume than Joe Calzaghe yes i will concur.

However If Joe Calzaghe was 10 years younger and was in this new era do i think he would win the super 6 hands down.... YES

Other than Green, Dirrell is the guy in the S6, who I am least sold on.

He seems a little frail to me and I am yet to witness him put in a world-level performance over 12 rounds.
