Hopkins. Hopkins is a much more of an all around fighter and has shown different styles over the years to great effect. He had to work at it a lot harder though as Toney is also vastly skilled as well but was more a natural.

I can't pick between the two but this question makes me mad that the 2003 proposed fight between the two at cruiserweight never happened.

Hopkins could teach Toney discipline. Yeah that little thing that tells you to wake up everyday at 5AM in the morning and put yourself through discomfort. To not take a drink even though it will make you feel good. To not go out to the clubs at night.. To not smoke a cigarette or joint. To eat right everyday.

Hopkins had better footwork than Toney. He could teach him that (not that James would be inclined to listen for even one second :D). The outside-the-ring stuff is irrelevant.

It is relevant. Discipline is relevant in how you perform inside the ring along with your mental framework. They determine how you will train everyday and how far you are willing to push yourself. Work ethic matters in anything in life.

Yes but you're continually harping on about it, and to what end? Toney's career is over, he can't go back in time and change his mentality. It is more meaningful and interesting to discuss what they were like inside the ring, this is a boxing forum after all. There are things Toney did better than Hopkins (infighting for one), there are things Hopkins did better than Toney (footwork being one). These two fighters were fascinating and brilliant, and on a thread which is primarily about skill we should discuss their skills, no? Not whether James Toney liked a bacon double cheeseburger now and then.

It's a tough question to answer, really. Both guys have assets that would greatly benefit each other in the ring. Hopkins has discipline as far as diet and staying in shape goes, as well as different game plans that he implements in addition to his good footwork. Toney is a born fighter, with one of the most natural skill sets in the entire sport as seconded by Freddie Roach, and he's a guy who can stand and trade with you all day.

Overall, I'd have to say Toney's more skilled when it comes to being a natural fighter, but Hopkins takes the cake when it comes to the overall package, without a doubt.

Gotta go with Toney, Hopkins is more of a lead hook, clinch repeat.

Who would win in a fight between the two at this stage of their careers at heavyweight?
