No, no problem, it's just something that's never mentioned. The fight is seen as Louis receiving a beating, it's never mentioned that Marciano got his front teeth knocked out ! I'll keep my eyes open for that. :good
You'll be looking for a while..it doesn't happen. :nut Supposively Layne lost his teeth against Marciano on the knockout punch...not sure if its true but its often passed down.
Mendoza will agree with anything to degrade Joe Louis. He hates Louis. He even thinks Godoy beat Louis in the first fight, and that Louis had judges in his backpocket.
Did you see Louis in the Walcott fights? What Unforgiven said was spot on. If you understood my comment I think Walcott is one of Louis best wins. As for degrading a fighter, posting Louis as an older fighter isn't exactly being kind to him. Watch the 1st Godoy fight sometime. I saw more than you did, and in the aired footage of the rounds, Godoy was the better. Louis was dumbfounded, forget to throw his uppercut, was out worked, out landed, and bulled into the ropes too often. I wish we could post the fight here to score it. :deal
It was enough to propel him to victories over the finest of his era, and enable him to put together in my opinion one of the best winning resumes in heavyweight history. Walcott beat Joe Louis I(Imo), Ezzard Charles 2x, Harold Johnson, Elmer Ray 2x, Joey Maxim 2x, Jimmy Bivins, Lee Q Murray, Joe Baksi, Lee Oma, Hatchetman Sheppard 2x, Tommy Gomez, Hein Ten Hoff, Willie Reddish, Omelio Agramonte. This is a sick resume when you consider the amount of Hall of Famers/Ring top 10 contenders/big punchers he's beaten. A. Ezzard Charles was one of the best fighters who ever lived. No Shame in losing to him. B. I recommend re-watching the 2nd fight. It's a myth that fight was a near shutout victoy(Horrible cards)..Watch the fight. Walcott staggers Charles numerous times with big right hand counters or powerful left hooks. Has Charles on Jelly legs 5 or 6 times. If you read Newspaper reports, they will say the fight was a lot closer than the scores indicated and some fans thought Walcott won. Walcott himself said the 2nd fight was much closer than people realize. C. Walcott twice evened up the score by beating Charles in the 3rd and 4th fights, including a one punch knockout victory(which arguably gives him the edge in the series) Yes...big upset. Douglas also beat Tyson. Spinks also beat Holmes. Moorer also beat Holyfield. Willard also beat Johnson. McCall beat Lewis. Upsets do happen. Layne was no stiff. He was a young, strong, hard hitting heavyweight contender who could put up a high workrate. At his best, he was capable of giving many champions a hard nights work. You can cherrypick one particular cute trick he did that got him "knocked out" but fact is Walcott made Louis look silly with his cute bag of tricks for 26 rounds before louis finally caught up with him. That's a fine opinion. I like Baer and Schmeling and rate them well. I don't think either were as good as Walcott(especially M Baer)..but Schmeling was certainly up there. Sure..but not as a heavyweight. He did record some nice victories at heavyweight(over Savold and Pastor) but he did not have anywhere near the proven success of Jersey Joe. In a fantasy fight, I think Walcott would beat Billy. Walcott had the skills/speed to match Billy..but was too strong, powerful and crafty for Billy at his best..though Billy would make a close fight out of it. Like who? Lou Nova? LOOOOL So you rank fighters based upon what they were viewed at during the time? That's pretty unfair isn't it? I think people realized after Walcott retired just how great of a win Louis' come from behind knockout over Walcott was. How many 34 year old ATG heavyweight champions could have defeated a Prime Jersey Joe Walcott? A few at best?
:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl I have watched the fight. Your assessment is a joke as is your scorecard. I had Louis handily winning it. You don't score points by crouching so low your head touches the floor. Louis landed all the clean sharp flush blows in the fight.
What other ATG heavyweight champions could beat a prime Jersey Joe Walcott at age 34? Perhaps only Lennox Lewis. I can't think of any others.
Thanks for the fight I can't get enough of Louis. I wish there was more viewable footage of Walcott and Ezzard though.
Ok, then I guess a dentist hiding somewhere in Marciano's corner removed his top front teeth between rounds... :-(
There is footage of Louis/Godoy I on YouTube. Mendoza also once claimed that Louis/Pastor I was a close fight that could have gone either way, and that Louis getting the nod was indicative of mob influence in the judges, when in fact it was basically a complete shut-out.
Wlacott lost this many times : + 7 You can't think of any other ATG that could beat Walcott in his pime? Wow.
