Olivares is legendary not only for his terrific record. 77 ko's in 88 wins, 23 in a row, world titles at bantanweight and featherweight and thrilling classic fights against Lionel Rose, Chucho Castillio, Alexis Arguello and Bobby Chacon are enough for ATG consideration.
But also to be considered is Rubens party animal reputation out of the ring. His swashbuckling bad boy personna out of the ring is what propells Olivares past Marquez in legend status, especially with the Mexican fans.

    Olivares drank beer, not urine.

Olivares was a living legend because like other boxing living legends(ie. Chavez, Tyson, Duran, etc) he was perceived as a bad-ass in and out of the ring.

His partying and womanizing are legendary!

Its not everyday we agree, but i agree 100%.

Olivares is almost universally considered the 2nd greatest fighter to come out of Mexico (after Chavez), and for a long time was consiidered THE greatest to come out of Mexico, until Chavez appeared on the scene. El Puas is also considered the hardest hitting 118lber ever (him or Zarate at least).

No offence to Marquez, who is excellent and our current best boxer, but he aint on Ruben's level.

  10. You ever had beer in Mexico? I'm not sure there's a difference.

Serious question: Does anybody think Marquez would get knocked out by Little Red?

Not too sure about getting knocked out cold, but i could see him getting stopped. But then again, i can also see Marquez counterpunching giving Little Red some problems, but Lopez' power was just crazy, and it would be just a matter of time before Lopez clocks him, hurts him and eventually stops him IMO.

Good points. I made the comparison because Oliveras was pretty near the end of his career when he fought Lopez. Pound for pound, prime for prime Ruben is the better man.
