Yeah i'll agree that it's not as if he didn't have a chance, because of his form in terms of the boxing scene at the time, but it is a shell of Roberto Duran, but Leonard is past prime too.
SuzieQ : TommyV : :good SuzieQ, you should have watched the video ! Next time do so, and you'll less likely to come out with such embarrassing comments. :good
Leonard has been heard admitting he fought the wrong fight in Montreal...oh wait, he was lying that time.
Duran getting all porkied up is to be expected considering his background of wreched poverty but he did'nt expect that he'd ambushed in this way. Anyway the buck stops with him or any athlete put into a take it or leave it situation but $9MILLION back in 1980 being offered to a barely literate guttershipe ai'nt going to be turned down & what with his macho nature & image he was a sucker waiting to happen with regards to the machinations employed by the Leonard camp People tend to look at this event through western liberal eyes which are'nt in themself qualified to understand Duran's background & phychi & at the end of the day Duran really did'nt give a flying **** about it.......He got paid!!!!! & thats what it's all about & thats why he fought!! It was his only means of income living he was'nt a plumber/brickie/butcher/backer/candlestickmaker. HE FOUGHT FOR PAY & **** all to do with glory.......thats why he fought on into his 50's..not for the fun of it as it was all he knew & could do + everyone owned a piece of him.....Bob Arum always said that if you said to Duran i'll give you a cheque for $1MILLION or $50K cash today then Duran would take the $50K Duran always trusted those around him seeing he grew up with them & he's not the 1st or won't be the last to get fed to the wolves, but i expect Duran thought that seeing he beat Leonard once then no prob the 2nd time, but he's no fool as it must have dawned on him this time the weight would'nt shift as it got near fight time....He missed the weigh in twice & only just hit it with 6 hours remaining.... It was'nt a case of getting paid after the fight as he was paid BEFORE the fight & all that the contract stipulated to get the $$$$$$$$ released was that Duran enter the ring.......The hook was well & truly baited. As a few others have pointed out here is that the fight was not great spectacle as Duran just plodded away & Leonard kept as far away from danger as he could....a close dull affair & if it had been anyone else but the new media darling in Leonard the crowd would have boo'd the roof of at Leonards lack of intestinal fortitude..... If Duran had just carried on & lost a UD you'd expect a rubber match but that would never have happened as Leonard never ever gave anyone a re-match........I remember the popular concensus in the press back then was that Leonards antics & fight stratergy reeked of fear & he was duly castigated by some sections of the media as a fraud/hype job & a wannabe ALI....... Duran did'nt actually get such a mauling as you might think, Leonards victory was tainted in many eyes & what a lot of mugs today think is funny what Leonard did in the 7th round was slammed by everyone back then & more so by Leonard fans & one of my best mates who was/is a Leonard nut watched it live by satelitte in London & he thought along with the majority of Leonard fans that Duran was winning the fight but the ending was of course shocking.
Hey Troll; Whats so funny about Leonard fans who watched this fight live by Satellite being of the opinion that Duran was ahead in the fight.
Never has such a bull**** "fight" gotten as much discussion undeservedly as thing one. Both fighters put on crappy showings, Leonard with his stupid clowning, and Duran was just an outright disgrace and he didn't deserve a penny of whatever crazy purse they had him on. The crowd should have torn the ****ing seats up and had a riot.
Its a shame after the fight Arcel wanted no part of Duran, "no fighter quits in my corner." They were a great team together.
the most important fact to note is that Leonard did not make Duran quit, he quit himself! because he needed a poo
