i watch closed circuit tv live with a group of friends who like boxing, typically they are all fans of different fighters and it makes for good talk. As for going to live fights, I've only been able to see one BIG fight up close(not a lot of live boxing in my area), and that was spinks-judah. I am going to see Alexander-kotelnick/cloud-johnson/spinks-bundrage live next month though :hat
I did'nt say all you dumb ****. I relaying what was said to me by a Leonard fan who saw it live.......anyway......**** off.
The point that i'am making to you is when watching an event live you can never ever really get too grips on what you are actually watching & what expectations that you take with you to the fight cloud yer judgement a tad due too the occasion & adrenilin pumping through you. I could'nt care less if some Leonard fans thought he was losing but thats what my mate thought at the time as he & a few others were just concerned at the time that Leonard was'nt doing enough & the judges scorecards reflected that a bit......it was'nt as one sided as it seems, **** fight but close. Easy when you get back home & watch it on disc is'nt it......but in heat of the moment those 12 ring a dings just go in a flash.
And yet when it comes to the Leonard fights, Duran was a 230+ man who was forced to cut off his arm in order to make weight. Oh, and if we're counting the opinions of singular people, Duranimal, Manny Steward and the New York Times had Leonard winning the first fight. So if we take Duran's word as gospel here, we should do the same for Leonard when he says he fought a worse fight the first time around. The only reason Duran even says anything on it anymore is because he knows his fanatics will take it as truth and use it as an excuse for what he did.
Yes. He was a completely indisciplined idiot for doing that. Understandable considering his background, but he was a lesser fighter because of it. Only an idiot would score that fight for Leonard. It was not even particularly close IMO. It would be like scoring the second fight for Duran. I don't believe what Duran says. He quit because he was frustrated and because he was getting beaten. I don't believe Leonard's "I fought the wrong fight" excuse either.
Whats the matter with you:nut Manny Steward would say that Leonard won the Montreal fight as he thought he saw his unification with Tommy go up in smoke & as far as the New York Times...... what do you expect form the media who lurrrrrrrrved there media creation...their new ALI....just another slob hack drooling over a pretty young black buck & Leonard really Knew how to work these ****ers with his "aw shucks & then a little effeminate wink to the camera.......Ferdie Percheco was gagging for him...he literaly drooled over Leonard when he interviewed him........Don't get me wrong SRL is an ATG & master blaster fistic craftsman but he was also a very well schooled & polished performer in front of camera + along with his ruthless business acumen only matched by his ability in the ring. Liberal America was screaming out for an ALI replacement that they could use & as a role model for racial harmony & Leonard new that & played it like a master.
I just rewatched the first fight last week. I don't think it gets enough consideration as being one of the greatest filmed fights, competitive, close, skilled... 15 ROUNDS... Truly awesome. There is no debating that, regardless the reason, Duran chumped out of the second fight. I have read in numerous locations that Leonard and crew knew to sign the rematch for as soon as possible, knowing full well Duran would not return to serious training and would instead party out a few months. Kudos to them for such dealings. That, too, is part of the game.
My point about bringing up the New York Times and Manny Steward is that everyone has opinions they can prop up to support their argument. Also, as Duranimal points out, everyone has their agenda, gasp, even Duran, when he gives his reasons for quitting.
Yes,and what a lot of people do n't know is that Duran told his corner that he needed a portable toilet brought into the ring, otherwise he'd quit the fight ! Seriously though, these events of 30 years ago can only be explained by Duran being frustrated, and knowing he was n't in the shape that he should have been to chase Leonard for 15 rounds. I'm a big fan of Roberto, and it really pissed me off at the time. Some people compare this to Ali-Liston 1 but Liston was actually hurt by Muhammad's punches as well as being frustrated. Leonard was not hurting Duran.
Duranimal just so you know, i do actually like you as a character. I feel like we bring out the best in each other. Our opposing views, the sexual tension, our extremes of love and hate, our common obsession. I feel like we're in Twilight. I'm Jacob, Duran is Edward and you're Bella. Its one ****ed up love triangle.
Sorry mate if i cant detect sarcasm but which part of the post was bull****? I think its a pretty honest assessment
Moreso King's fault, as Duranimal just pointed out. Either way, I'm not making excuses for Duran's lack of preparation or quitting in the center of the ring. I'm simply saying that it was not the same Duran in there.
