I just can't believe Duran would quit in a fight he was winning....how do you feel about it, Duranimal?
You're right. Duran was only a little bit smaller than Leonard. Duran grew from 120 pounds when he turned pro at age 16, to about 135 pounds at age 20, and then basically held his weight down because he held the lightweight title, and was fighting non-title fights at a solid 140 throughout that time. Duran was in lean mean shape at 146 in Montreal. Duran was definitely a bit soft at middleweight, but Hagler wasn't a large-framed middleweight, just dense and muscular. A man like Iran Barkley was big though !
well, you seem to think duran was winning before he quit. you in the minority there. Leonard though, certainly had a plan as far pushing the fight when duran was blowing up on weight. he did a similar thing when taking the hagler fight, after seeing hagler struggle with mugabi. Leonard is quite shrewd but he honest about it.
Hagler looked average against Mugabi...so what...Leonard hadn't fought a professional fight in 3 years and was moving up to fight someone who hadn't lost in 11 years. Yet all we keep hearing is Leonard took advantage of Hagler... ...Seriously, this needs to stop.
calm down chief, nobody said that leonard didnt deserve credit. fact is leonard admitted that he decided to take hagler on after seeing him with mugabi, so what are you going to say to that? he took a well calculated risk, because the ring rust was certainly a factor and could have hindered him. however he was banking on the prospect that despite the layoff he had retained enough speed to pull it out, and he was right. just calling it what it is, you see.
Then I'll tell you what the man said out of his own mouth too... "I fought the wrong fight in my first fight with Duran" :good
We know he said it. But you know when Foreman says that he was scared of Frazier and Norton during his fights with them? Do you believe that as well? Because i don't, it seems like he's saying it for some kind of drama value to be added to the story of the fight. Well that could be the case with Leonard. I'm not saying that is the case, but it doesn't mean that it's cement just because Leonard (who is a dramatist) said it.
And another thing...there are posters, every bit as delusional and foul mouthed as this Duranimal that post regularly in the General Forum. They are dismissed as jokers not to be taken seriously...but here we have a Duran fanatic who shoots anyone down who even attempts to credit Leonard with a bit of credit...saying I'm a dumb **** because he was ****ing my mother whilst she was pregnant with me...but we don't dismiss him as a joker....we say, "ahhh...what a character". All because it's ****in Roberto.
so? why did you bring that up? everybody knew he allowed duran to get under his skin and played right into duran's hands. unless you're just stating the obvious, which is ok.
