You are correct -The infamous 'PIVOT" punch George LsBlanche crashed
to Noinpareil jack Dempsey in 1899 koing Dempsey in the 32rd..The punch was forever banned in boxing, and Dempsey retained his title..
    Good work, Unforgiven !

    I'm not entirely sure.
It's either a "spinning backfist", or a wild straight-armed swing thrown in a complete 360-turn. Or something of that nature.
    They banned it.

My guess would be the "spinning backfist".

I don't see, how a straight-armed swing thrown in a 360-turn could be effective. But if you find yourself in a position where you maybe have your back to your oppenent, a swinging "backhander" would probably catch your opponent by surprise - and could be delivered with quite some force.

The now banned pivot punch was used by some old timers and it was a devasting weapon..The fighter would intentionally or not ,miss a kleft hook or right cross, and with full force and speed crash their elbow or forearm in the unguarded victims jaw or forehead causing great damage..Imagine
being hit when unaware with an elbow on your jaw or forehead !!!
After George LaBlanche kod NP Jack Dempsey in the 32rd,knocking NP cold, The "PIVOT " punch was forever banned in the Ring...After the KO
NP Dempsey still retained his middleweight title...
P.S. after they missed the punch they would "PIVOT" their body.thus the
    name PIVOT......

I'm thinking maybe when under attack the fighter might duck and turn his back and just pivot all the way around with a "clothesline" like move, if it catches you it will hurt, esp. if it's forearm or side of fist.
It's got the same momentum as the spinning backfist, which could have been pivot punch too.

Burt offers a different description of the punch. I'm not entirely sure.

It was not an exact science. Whatever part of your striking hand that hit
your victims head was not seen or expected..It would do great damage..
But it seems to me an elbow exploding on your victims jaw or forehead
would be most catastrophic...And that's what kod Dempsey...
