I always liked Tua but was never as impressed as the masses. He seemed very slow and in some fights his power was impotent, while in others such as Ruiz(young John) and Moorer(old) he showed fierce power. Tua's claim at a solid chin came from his fight with IKE (another unknown entity) While I think David was solid, I remember him taking a punch from Lewis that kept him honest the rest of the fight. I think Dave was strong but so highly overated on ESB. From what I heard he was lucky to get a draw vs Monte Barrett last night and was dropped in the final round. I think although he was not always in top form, Tua had decent stamina and late power for a today heavyweight but his pace was slow. It seems like it is over for David now and the next fight heavyweights may be gunning for his chin instead of laying back in awe in fear of his power. Still I always felt he was overated and over respected.
That he should be some feared H2H guy with the greats, I'd agree he's overrated there. That he was never championship material? I think he was certainly "titlist" material at least. He beat titlists, former and future, just never present. And he's certainly at least on the level as a total package with other brief lesser champs, like Sanders and Brewster, imo. A good solid fighter, just not great. That seems fair to me.
This is a great sample for examination of Tua's abilities and legacy. I have some Jumbo Cummings footage with which we can analyze Joe Frazier, or perhaps Berbick v Ali to see where The Greatest really stands.
I could never see Tua compete with a great stamina heavyweight. Most of his wins were over young never been's and old has been's and he struggled with a lot in the middle tier I like David but he was fortunate that he had his opponent pre-imposed with fear
It doesn't have as much to do with Tua being past prime as it does with people on this site hyping Tua as someone who could defeat both Klits today. That myth was very much exposed last night by an equally past prime Barrett, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Tua was much better fighter in his Prime then he was last night. All though I do agree that he has always been a bit over rated. He had legitimate KO power a rock jaw and good stamina, how many heavyweights of recent years off the top of your head had as many late comeback knock outs as Tua? Not many, he could have for sure been a champion he just fought a Prime Lewis and that was to heavy a task. I mean the guy has wins over Heavyweight champs like Ruiz, Rahman, Moorer and Maskaev.
Funny how before this fight..everyone was saying "Tua will kill him in one round. Tua hasn't lost in 9 years...He still has it look what he did to shane cameron. W Klitschko better watch out for tua!" Now a day later, its "O ya I knew Tua was shot all along".
I wont draw any huge inferences from this episode. I thought he was shot and said as much before the fight. He is lucky that Barret put a stop to him being matched with one of the beltholders and getting butchered. That aside, Tua is one of the most over rated fighters head to head on this forum. The names of many all time greats have been taken in vain on his behalf.
It's almost automatic for many posters here to say Tua would destroy Marciano/Frazier/Dempsey in 1-2 rounds like he was some sort of George Foreman/Mike Tyson type fighter. He wasn't even close. Tua would not beat any ATG heavyweights regardless of style matchups.
Tua kinda' reminds me of George Foreman, but missing a foot in height..... Tua, bald and looking tank like, is slower than molasses, but still capable of kayoing a rhino--provided he hits home..... MR.BILL:hat
Since his draw with Rachman in 2003, Tua had nine fights in seven years, zero against top ten opposition. AS a short heavyweight, his style depends on speed, conditioning and stylistic match up to succeed. At his best he was beatable by good boxers. I don't recall anyone calling him a great heavyweight. I do personally believe his skill set at his best made him a horrible match up for smaller, offensive minded fighters. Most importantly, anyone that now tries to prove a Tua point based on this 37 year old version is simply not to be taken seriously.
Maybe so..but their is a difference between smaller offensive minded fighters.. and ATG smaller offensive minded fighters(Louis, Frazier, Dempsey, Langford, Marciano)... Tua cannot beat ATG's.
