It's just that Sakurai is basically a forgotten contender who never lived up to the potential he showed in that fight, and Rose is typically thought of as one of the most skilled Bantamweights technicians of the modern era. The fact that a fighter who made his name on his technique and finesse was pretty much out-classed in those areas by such a fighter was very off-putting to me. Granted, Rose eventually took the initiative and closed up the distance later in the fight. I'm not sure he'd have won had I actually scored the fight, though. One thing's for sure, he didn't live up to a lot of his previous performances and the reputation he acquired as part of them.

I came off watching that fight a lot more impressed by Sakurai.

No doubt about it, Sakurai was giving Rose a boxing lesson early on there.

Sakurai tired a little bit as the fight wore on and Rose eventually came on and eeked it out (agree with you there G), but he struggled to hit Sakurai clean all the way up until the final round, which was the definitive round for me. Rose won it big and thereby took the fight.

    My card:

Lionel Rose vs. Takao Sakurai: 143-141 Rose
    Sakurai: 1,2( 10 - 8 ) ,3,4,5 and 12.
    Rose: 6,7,9,10,11,12,13,14 and 15( 10 - 8 ).
    Round 8 even.

I agree with most of it. I just think we are different in our outputs, I generally am positive and you are generally more negative towards such things. By negative I do not mean that as a slight of you, it is our attitudes.

I look at it as Sakurai being forgotten/underrated and as you say a fighter who never lived up to his potential, doing really well against a solid champion. But Rose fought out of his comfort zone but still found a way to win (well for me anyway, you might think different). I think of it more as a good thing for Sakurai rather than a black mark on Rose.

Like I said before by 'negative' I dont mean that as a slight.

We are agreeing too much lately. Normally we have differewnt takes on fights. I actually, from memory, think I had it a point closer to Sakurai by way of not scoring an even round. I think our scorecard is very close though.

You actually were the one that enlightened me on this fight, with some help with alFrancis

I agree with you Teeto mate. Out of all me dad's I think this is technicaly the most skillful by both fighters. Nobody has watched this fight more than me..
Harada was at his peak in this one as well between the two Jofre fights.

Greg and Al, it's a great technical fight, easily one of my faves ever. Did you know Tyson has been in your hometown over the weekend? He said some golden words on the radio, he was visiting a gym in the city and said something like 'I understand these kids, because i come from a city like this'

So i can now proudly class Tyson as an honourary scouser. Apparently all the young boxers were in awe, he'd never have a bad word spoken to him round here, everyone know sees him as a God. What a scouser.

Rumour has it that Tyson has routes from Liverpool, don't know how true it is but back in the 80's he was in Liverpool and one of me dad's mates John Smith and a few of the lads did present him with a Liverpool passport

bit one sided for me, maybe the first one. I've never really thought of Moon as being skillful. He definitely had other attributes though.

Hosegawa-Sahaphrom (I liked the skill level displayed by both in these two fights)
Paulie Ayala-Johnny Tapia (Both fights were slugests, but skilled slugfests)
