This was shown on Freeview, saturday night. Pretty good, but we seem to be inundated these days with 'why Frazier's pissed off with Ali' features. Which is what the majority of the programme was about. Yes,Ali did go over the top with Frazier at times. Muhammad is the first to admit it,but Frazier needs to move on,and be satisfied with his own achievements.
Nice one Stevie, I sat & watched in absolute reverant silence, I've watched before but it's an absolute gripping classic of a documentry & i thought Ferdie Percheco was at his candid best. This has to be the greatest warts & all doco on Ali/Frazier...... The hate just oozed out of the screen & i can only have absolute sympathy for Joe as Ali was a crual nasty ****er of a man in reality. As they say HATE blinds you & consumes you in the end but it seems to be the only oxygen for Joe's existence now. I agree with you in the fact he surely must realise that he is a legend & revered by all of us & after all he did beat ALI when it really mattered & He's the champ & always will be & the Thriller in Manilla has only cemented that legacy even more so like you i'd love to see him focus more on the positive's of his momentus victory in the "Fight of the Centuary" but obviously in his defence what he was subjected too by ALI was appalling & i remember it as clear today as back then, i hated Ali's guts...Great Boxer but a **** of a man:deal
There seems to be two versions of this documentary - the one on More 4 & the HBO one. Both use the same clips & interview with Ferdie Pacheco. Can't remember whether they're more or less the same, or hbo adding a bit extra to **** on Ali.
Well,I've always been a big Ali fan. My favourite ever boxer, but that's what good debate's all about. I'm not blind to his faults though. It's like we've said,he went too far with Frazier and he was totally stupid for allowing himself to be lured back to the ring for those terrible fights with Holmes and Berbick. Muhammad is a man with flaws, but just like the great Roberto,we love 'em in spite of,and even because of them. What shocked me on that programme on Saturday was Frazier's appearance. Ali's sickness has always been well documented, but this is the first time I've seen Frazier on TV foe quite a few years. Joe did not look well at all. Keep punching Duranimal :good
Notice that when they did the bit about their second fight, all the talk was about Ali's clinching. Not one word about Tony Perez hearing premature bells in the second round.
Truth be known my older brother was a massive Ali disciple & used to batter me all around the bedroom with his Ali moves hence the teenage angst towards ali I doubt there been such a huge & massive figure in any sport ever that can eclipse ALI in or out of the ring as he truly was a global figure/icon for truth/justice & change against that ultra conservative post war goverment mentality of the day. I remember the crowds in Southampton when i was a kid when ALI arrived from the States at the docks & liturally the whole town shut down to go see him open a department store.....you are so right about flaws & all, thats what makes them great & thats what makes them human & the guy or the kid on the street can equate to them unlike the calculating media creations we despise so much & i agree with you regarding Joe...He's really looking tired & worn out is'nt he, i was shocked also...jeezus he's just 63 & if yer said 73 i'd have said yeh easy. It's such a shame that he has trapped himself into the past in such a negative way. I just can't bring myself to watch the Holmes fight ever again, it's really upsetting & watching that boudini brown & the rest of the parasites yelping & screaming is enough to make yer gag. Terrible night & of all the ALI fight posters (Which are all now worth a min of $1K+) the Holmes poster from Ceasars Palace has the mark of the leper on it....no one wants it...& who'd want that on their walls.......pity as it's a beauty for all the wrong reasons. Dead right ! I've never watched that Holmes-Ali fight in it's entirety. Only the bits that I have on the Champions Forever vid. I remember it being on tele the night after it happened. This was a Friday, and I went straight to the pub. I was too upset about it and did n't want to stay in and watch it. Thankfully in those days, pubs did n't have wide screen tv !
It was a great doc ... Frazier has long gotten the short end of the stick and deserves the justification it gives him ... Ali was no saint. He mellowed out as an older man but far too many have forgotten the real story ..
It was Frazier's story, and it included many ill-assumptions of Ali and omitted things for their own doing (Like the fact Frazier always called Ali Clay) while then having his entourage understand why Ali wouldn't fight on religious grounds (When Frazier has often said he should've went to represent the country).
Get this self righetous sanctimonious drivel out of here. **** of a man? Ali stood up for civil rights. He was willing to die for a cause and put two fingers up at a racist establishment. You on the other hand are some miserble anorak with no ****ing respect. Get to ****.
