Los Angeles - During his visit to The Boxing Truth Radio, HBO broadcaster Larry Merchant displayed his dry classic wit when discussing the unwillingness of Floyd Mayweather Junior to sign a contact which would put him inside a ring against Manny Pacquiao this Fall.

Using Mayweather’s moniker of “Money” to poke fun at the former pound for pound champion’s decision to by-pass a Pacquiao fight for now, Merchant said the following, “He calls himself Money and he is being offered a fight that could make him more money than anyone has virtually ever made in this sport, you wonder what the real story is.”

Merchant continued to say, “If you fight twice a year, why cannot you enjoy your life the rest of the time.”

Merchant’s comments were directed towards Mayweather’s statement made to the Associated Press earlier Sunday which read, “I'm not really thinking about boxing right now. I'm just relaxing. I fought about 60 days ago, so I'm just enjoying myself, enjoying life, enjoying my family and enjoying my vacation. Like I said, I'm just supporting my family and relaxing. That's what I'm doing right now."

Merchant questioned why Mayweather won’t fight for a 40 million dollar payday, and one has to wonder if fear of Manny Pacquiao played into the equation.

No way he made 40 mil. Only 2 people I know could have made PPV money like that, and Floyd isn't one of them. Remember Tyson and Oscar anyone?

You said potential figures, not actual figures. Getting 20 mil a fight nowadays is so damn rare. Only fighters like Tyson, Oscar and possibly a Holy was generating money like that, cuz they fought all the top ranked fighters. It is so hard for me to believe he made 40 mil fighting a shot Mosley. 20 mil maybe, but 40 is so impossible in this day in age.

Larry is stating the obvious which is common sense. Of course everyone is going to call it like they see it and the fact is no one can really justify Floyd's direction in NOT getting this money and taking this challenge. He made somewhere in the range of $25 to $30 mill for his one fight with Shane this year and could easily double that with one fight with PAC. Money obviously is not "MONEY Mays" most influencial baseline when making decisions on who he fights like most thought.

Could be....if he's on vcation he deserves it. But by being on vacation he has people he has employed that are suppose to handle his business matters. Obviously Floyd did not allow his managers or publicists to speak on his behalf while on "vacation".
