The reason Roberto Duran Quit

You clearly implied it and it's pretty sad that you're running from it now when it's still out there to see for anyone.

I've seen a lot of his stoppages at Lightweight, and own his career set. A medal is not neccesary, I just felt the need to clear a few things up for you.

No, ripcity said it. You certainly made the first one though. And you constantly attack the Duran agenda that apparently runs through this forum despite those kinds of statements floating around, which don't seem to bother you.

 

I see the Laing fight isn't on there, though you've seen fit to comment on that one before.

I own probably four times as many Duran fights as that. I'm not looking for a medal either, but there's a lot of footage out there that it's worth checking out that might change your opinion of the man.

 

What opinion would that be? I think he was the best of the Fab Four, and one of the greatest fighters I have ever seen on film. With that said, I'm not ignorant to the ridiculous bias he enjoys in his favor on the Classic Forum.

I own about 60 Roberto Duran fights.

Side note, I've never made a serious comment regarding the Laing fight. I tend to believe that Duran would have had to be pretty demotivated and uninterested to have lost to a fighter of Laing's calibre, though.

Just make a poll about how many people believe "Leonard fought the wrong fight" and about how many people believe "Duran wasn't the same in the rematch". That'll tell you all you need to know about "bias".

anyone that actually has watched the Laing fight, regardless of bias should be able to see Duran was vastly out of shape...as long as they have eyes that is.

Hence why those using it in the "only the fanboys say he was out of shape blah blah" context are not to be trusted and regarded as shameless frauds.

In general maybe Duran gets a pass for past-prime performances a little more so than most fighters. But Duran apologists are far from the worse. At least he's earned his status, which is pretty indisputable. Not quite the same as the status or rankings some other fighters get from some that are completely undeserved(*Cough Liston *Cough).

 

Right, Louis quit, and that is comparable to Duran's stomach cramps.

 

How many people think "Leonard fought the wrong fight" is a valid excuse?

How many people think "Durna was out of shape" is a valid excuse?

 

.... The implicit assumption here, being that pulling the most blatant, embarrassing quit job is somehow equal to losing a close, hard fought decision.

 

No, I'm talking about the reason for one fighter getting the better of another. As teeto says so often, Duran quit because he was losing. Leonard lost because he was losing. But there will be more people who claim that Leonard proved he was the better man and that he just got his strategy wrong first time around than will the opposite because Duran was out of shape in New Orleans.
