Hearns spent little time at LtHvy but could have settled in and had a decent career there. Physically he was the same size as Foster. How long would a "shoot-out" between these two have gone, or would have Hearns just boxed?
Recently discussed here, actually http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=229092&highlight=foster+hearns As much as I love Hearns, I don't see how he competes with a top tier natural LHW in Foster.
Foster absolutely destroys Hearns. It weas amazing that Hearns could beat someone like Virgil Hill, but he never beats a big puncher of his own size.
Ive met both in person and even an Old Foster is at least a couple inches taller. Even if Hearns just boxed i dont give him much of a shot here. If he boxes he dont make it past the mid rounds. If he fights like the Hitman then Foster blitzes him early.
Jesus, you can't even make a pick on this forum nowadays without being accused of favouritism or hatred. It's pretty simple. Hearns is the better, faster, more mobile boxer with the better jab and tools and much deeper skillset. Foster could never outbox Hearns (even old Hearns). He would have to plod forward simplistically and hope to land a bomb, but it's unlikely since Hearns isn't going to be standing there for him like Tiger and is much more capable defensively than anyone Foster's ever beaten. Hill was a much more skilled fighter than Foster and old Hearns out-fought him clearly. Actually, considering Foster isn't exactly granite-chinned himself, I think I'll pick Hearns to open up with the right hand in the later rounds and stop Foster around the 8th-10th.
Foster's stalking record is far from great either. He struggled to cut off Finnegan over 15. I can't see him effectively pressuring the much more athletic and generally superior Hearns, especially over 12. His best chance would be to try and play on Hearns' limited stamina and make a charge when Hearns resorts to blocking and going to the ropes in the later rounds, though with that comes the added risk that he gets knocked out himself.
It would be hard for Tommy to win this fight, although who knows how the right hand of Tommy would do on Foster's chin. I do think that Hearns would be the best fighter Foster would have fought at light heavyweight, but not the most natural. Of course the edge has to be on Foster.
I think Hearns maybe able to pull this off. It is Foster division and Hearns could certainly be stopped. But hes by far the better boxer between the 2 and still carries impressive power at LHW
