Floyd’s Advisor Claims – “Talks Never Took Place"

Leonard Ellerbe, one of Floyd Mayweather’s closest advisors has stated that ”no negotiations have ever taken place, nor was there ever a deal agreed upon by Team Mayweather or Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13.”

Confused? Yeah, we here at Boxing Dispatch are too.

So before we digest the latest twist in this seemingly never ending saga here are some important things to take note of:

Firstly, Top Rank want Manny Pacquiao to fight on November 13th. The opponent is yet to be finalized though it looks likely that it will be either the disgraced former titlist Antonio Margarito or current junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto.

Secondly, we can be fairly certain that no matter what actually took place (or not for that matter) between Bob Arum and Al Haymon, Floyd Mayweather Jr., does not want to fight this year.

Speculating on the reasons is fun and endlessly entertaining, but ultimately does not leave us with a fight to look forward too. Fans of both camps would much rather see a fight than fling insults and lay blame in both directions.

Despite the fact that the deadline had passed and we were no closer to fight, we were at least certain that talks had taken place – ones that ultimately led to nothing.

But in comments released to ESPN today, Leonard Ellerbe has made one thing clear,

“Here are the facts,” Ellerbe said in Monday’s statement.

“Al Haymon, [Golden Boy Promotions CEO] Richard Schaefer and myself speak to each other on a regular basis, and the truth is no negotiations have ever taken place, nor was there ever a deal agreed upon by Team Mayweather or Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13. Either Ross Greenburg or Bob Arum is not telling the truth, but history tells us who is lying.”

Well, Haymon’s and Arum’s dislike of each other is notorious. With Haymon also advising Paul Williams and Andre Berto it’s perhaps little surprise that these fighters are not mentioned as potential opponents for Manny Pacquiao. Instead his fellow Top Rank stablemates are on offer.

Neither of these pose a realistic challenge to Pacquiao. Margarito, fighting in Mexico after his sixteen month suspension looked rusty and is undeserving of a title shot. Meanwhile Cotto was soundly beaten by Pacquiao, and only the promise of a belt in a record extending eighth division is appealing in a fight few fans want to see.

But what’s to be made of Ellerbe’s comments?

Arum himself is perplexed and angry.

“I’m not going to be party to this ****. When I heard about (the statement) I thought it was a joke. Ross said he was talking to Haymon. He certainly wasn’t making it up. And Haymon was relaying conversations to Ross allegedly that Floyd had with him. At least that is what Ross says.”

But who are we to believe? Promoters are all of course talk and Arum and Haymon are no different. The one man who could of course clear this all up is Ross Greenburg, who acted as an intermediary during the negotiations. Ross Greenburg had this to say in an email to ESPN.com,

“No comment.”

At first glance it would be easy to dismiss Ellerbe’s comments as mere fluff – a smokescreen to distract from the charge that Floyd rejected the fight. But a man of such intelligence would surely be aware that few would buy such a line unless there was some substance to the matter. Arum surely placed the countdown clock on Top Rank’s website once he knew there was little chance of the contract being signed. Floyd might not be many of the things he claims to be (superior to Sugar Ray Robinson to name but one), but he is his own man.

One thing we can be sure of is that the fight looks less and less likely to take place, and the mystery of the negotiations is likely to drag on further. Who you choose to believe is up to you. But to end on a famous Bob Arum quote,

“Yesterday I was lying, but today I’m telling the truth”.

 

You can't **** anything with that baby dick of yours.

what i dont understand is Roach said they didnt want to put pressure on Floyd because he doesnt like to be forced....well the way they went about it thorugh the media doesnt look like they weren't trying to put pressure on him....i dont know:think

 

lol, if a countdown timer on the TR website and scheduling CCs at the exact minute the timer expires isn't "pressure" i don't know what is.

too many contradicting statements at this point. hopefully when the dust settles we'll be able to get our hands on the facts.

 

Let floyd retire without fighting pac... He won't even crack the top 70 atgs.

Right now he doesn't even compare to winky wright/trinidad/Toney.

You guys don't get it. Roach is saying "pressure" by Arum not telling Floyd outright he is scared just like during the 1st discussions. Now, Arum is saying Floyd didn't take the fight because of his trainer.

 

Let Pac keep fighting recently KO'd...drained fighters..and he'll be laughed out of the top 1000

 

I keep telling myself that this fight will happen. I just close my eyes and pretend and pretend and pretend that it is going to happen.

It just has to, it is really beginning to look eerily similar to the Hagler Leonard situation isn' t it? Can one of the old school fans out there remind us how long Sugar Ray avoided Pacqiao...I mean the Marvelous One?

Think about it Two similar invincible looking lefties who had blemishes due to some suspect management early in their careers both wanting to take out the "Golden Boy". They are both from humble beginnings, trust me I have been to Brockton it is no joke.

Leonard even fake retired because of Marvin. The comparisons are really endless if you think about it.

This fight has to happen, in the meantime I am just going to have to enjoy the emergence of Andre Ward as an elite p4p fighter, see if Alfredo Angullo can actually punch someones head off (I am ready to watch a jr middleweight showdown with Kermit), Also I think this Devon Alexander is going to have to fight someone of importance soon.

I just hope that when they fight their pay per view cost doesn't break the the $70 mark.

 

Don't matter to me. I have no vested interest in pacquiao.
