But they do, i'm talking about from a purists viewpoint, like Hatton-Witter should have happened. Mayweather-Pacquiao should happen, they are at the top of the same division, they should fight. Mayweather-Williams would be noce, like some of the fights you highlighted, it is not a must for the purists, just a novelty, Ripcity knows ****.
I think its ridiculous Robinson should be marked down for not fighting these guys, they were totally unnecessary fights. If he had fought them you would have had to give him mad dues for fighting ATG's without any real reason, as they were a higher weight class and at that point not even in Robinson's radar. They would be some of the best wins ever, presuming Ray won that is. It's madness. It would be like asking Ray Leonard to have fought Palomino, Stracey, Espadas, Cuevas, Antuofermo, Minter and Sibson before he won the title from Benitez.
True. but i was curios about how the fights would go, burley is the one everyone knows ray wouldnt have signed in the first place if there was no point, there had to have been, after burley won against another guy ray wanted out, but he never would have singned if there was nobenefit whatsoever would he?
Robinson was a money man really. Or so he said, he wanted big money for his risks and these guys were big risks with very little backing to pay for a big reward. The fights made very little sense, unless to a purist fan. My comments are more directed at ripcity though, I actual think the match-ups are interesting.
Fights don't have to be made that dose not mean fights shouldn't be made. In the case of Robinson and The Black Murderers Row. We are talking about some very talented boxers who were still at or very near the top of their games while Robinson was at or near his peak. Without these match ups we don't really know how good Robinson, Burley, Williams, Marshiall and Lytle really were. If Pacquiao and Mayweather never fight we will really know who is the best out of them. Greatness in all sports not just boxing is dependent on winning. I would like to know who would win. I would like a clear answer as to who the best is. I'd think this is something you would like to know too. Without these fights we have no clear answer.
Bro you really have to start researching and digging a little deeper before you make posts. We will wait.......
That's just ridiculous. Were talking about some very talented boxers that were coming towards the end of their reign when Robinson was just hitting his peak at a different weight. When Robinson first fought Lamotta in '43 he was 22 years old and very much the new kid on the block. Williams, Marshall, Burley, Chase, Lytell Cocoa Kid and Wade were all around seven, eight, nine, ten years older than SRR and campaigning at a different weight. Apart from the fights with Lamotta (which made a lot of sense money wise, not to mention the great rivalry) SRR was still campaigning at Welter into the late 40's. I don't see any reason why you think a young Robinson who primarily fought at Welter should move up and fight at Middleweight to prove his greatness. Should we be expecting the young Welters today to jump upto MW/SMW to clear out the division just because there's talent there?
well, considering robinson was fighting tough middleweight guys while still a young welter like lamotta begs the question how would he do with guys that are middle and near to his level.
At that point in his career Robinson probably gets beat to the better of them like Marshall, Burley and perhaps Williams and The Kid. Williams is a hard one as he was obviously at his prime at Welterweight and was past-it at Middleweight but still a fairly good force. He was a pure boxer with little power, so it would have been interesting to see how his fight with SRRave turned out.
Yeah I agree with this. I too can see him struggling with Marshall, Willams and especially Cocoa and Burley....I mean there's not many 22 year old Welters that wouldn't have struggled with them. Of course they would have been intriguing fights to watch but it really made no sense at the time, none at all.
