Fedor has one of the best striking techniques in MMA

Discussion in 'MMA Forum' started by monaroCountry, Jul 21, 2010.

  1. People criticize Fedor for having bad striking and stand-up skills and technique, however if you look at this video you’ll notice that there’s some reasoning behind how Fedor punches. His stand-up basically came from his Sambo background which have been designed specifically to incorporate boxing, kicking, judo and wrestling (along with no or very minimal gloves - as per real life scenarios).

Usually when he lands, he knocks people down or out. I'd say his technique is very sound.:good Plus, he will get right in someones range and throw multiple strikes. Fearless of being caught.

He also has pretty good head movement. He showcases it in the Arlovski fight. If you watch closely, Arlovski lands very few significant shots.

  4. Fedor is actually the least hit fighter in MMA amongst the top fighters, the guy gets hit less than Anderson Silva. But unlike Anderson, Fedor actually pushes the pase and is always on the attack.

Arlovski also trained boxing with Roach for that specific match too didn't he?

I'd call it one of the best standing techniques rather than best actual striking techniques, because if you takeaway the takedowns and standing grappling he uses his strikes to set up, the actual striking itself isn't as good.

I've tried to explain his punching style to some people who think its just wild and loopy for the sake of being wild and loopy, its not; it comes from combat sambo. The point of sambo is to throw the guy to the ground (simplisticly stated), the point of combat sambo is to be able to do this with punches involved.

So what he throws an overhand right, he is providing two options, land it, or set up grip for a trip/throw.Alternately, when he grabs for a grip for a throw he has two goals, get the grip, or create distance for a punch. Dan Henderson made a career out of it as well. Pulver did a good job of it in his early career, although it looked much different.

Throwing the overhand right and left hook to get an over/under grip to set up the trip.

Grabbing an overhook for a trip, missing it, but creating an opening for an overhand right:

He is not swinging wildly for its own sake; he is a Sambo fighter first and foremost he wants the throw! If he lands the punch, spec****intacular, but it is just a bonus.

What exactly are you basing that on other than guessing? He doesn't get hit less than Machida and Silva.

Good post. I'd say he's a very good striker (with fast hands) for someone so well-rounded in all other aspects.

It seems that arlovski didn't do much damage at all. Most of his shots either missed or were just glancing blows as fedor said in the interview. Was Fedor really outmatched in the stand up? I don't think so, Fedor seemed like he took those shots with stride and parried most of them. Arlovski only looked like he did damage, but in reality, fedor avoided any real clean shots that arlovski threw.

a bit like when Fedor was sparring with his brother.

knocked out arlovski standing, head movement was great in that fight. by the way fedor was content striking with arlovski he has great confidence in his stand up.

cro-cop all you need to see really. cro-cop at his best in a in a stand up war and fedor simply outstikes him. fedors head movement was fantastic he dodged many straight left hands and even a trademark LHK by mirko and immediately counters for a take-down ( 3:25 mark)

Beat the **** out of gary goodrige standing. liked how fedor mixed it up with uppercuts to the body:good also look for a knee to the body to set up a take-down (2:10 mark) fedor doesn't just beat you he beats you up!

I would like to add the fujita fight fedor shows he has a good chin when getting hit cleanly with a solid right to the jaw (3:00 mark) he does the right thing ties up, clears his head, whoops that ass!!:happy what did gsp do when he was rocked by serra didnt tie-up got tkoed.

that sparring between aleks and fedor is a fantastic example, in it fedor probably used the best head movement in mma with the exception of kj noons. thanks for that vid monaroCountry.
