calzaghe didnt hit lacy with 6 left hooks in a row coupled with uppercuts and talking to his pops in the stands while doing so..... now thats abuse!
As you mention, though, Jones was more interested in showing off what was left of his reflexes, showboating, flashy combinations etc. He probably even landed with more power in his individual shots than Calzaghe, despite being faded. Calzaghe just didn't stop touching him, though. There was no stopping to smell the roses, no clowning. He just kept pimp slapping the dog **** out of him. Lacy was caught in a bad storm for half an hour; and came out not only physically marked up but had his pride basically snapped like a twig. That's why his first beating was, IMO, his worst.
Joe pretty much ruined his career. It was an awful one sided beating that really should have been stopped.
thats why jones peformance was better to me because at the time both of them was considered faded...and the showboating jones did compared to calzaghes was way better... sure after a while good ol joe stared playing with lacy with his hands down... but yu cant tell me 6..7 lightning fast uppercuts and hooks landing when your considered shot aint ****in amazin... like i said before the beast came out in jones that night. jones beating was wayyyyy better... thats why when jones was doing it they did stop it before he got brain damage on the right side of his head....:deal
Calzaghes by far because he did it to an undefeated and supremly confident Lacy. By time Lacy got in the ring with Jones he was a fragile and broken thing.
i think the calzaghe fight looks worse on paper with the stats he had, but alot of calzaghe's punches were slappy and cuffing because no ones face could handle taking over 1100 punches in a fight without being all mashed up!! jones' punches were much more full blooded and that why he managed to stop him.
Lacy came as a favorite and was supposed to expose the euro -fighter Calzaghe. That fight reduced him from belt holder and superstar in the making to a second tier fighter. especially after Kessler gave a good effort in losing to Calzaghe and it was clear that Lacy only ever had a belt because he fought in America. Jones was great against Lacy, but psychologically it was nothing new for him to be outclassed.
I guess disagree with what constitutes a better beating. Lacey came into the Calzaghe fight with ALL the hype behind him. He was the next mini-Tyson, set to come over and destroy this euro hype job in a couple of rounds. The revionists tell it differently this days, but that was the case. All the Americans believed he was going to win, as did much of the british press. Most of all Jeff believed it himself. Then he gets in the ring and he just gets annihilated. It wasn't just his face that took a bashing, his pride, reputation and career took one too. He was made to look like an amateur, winding up big hooks, missing, getting turned and then bombarded with punches. He couldn't do ANYTHING. Jeff's career pretty much died that night. He was exposed as not being on the same level of the other champion in the division, so what was he going to do except fight for that payceck? He was never going to be some undisputed champion or dominate the division. Going into the Jones fight, Lacy new he was ****ed. His shoulder had gone, he knew he wasn't as good as he once believed himself to be. He knew what it was like to get beat up by a fighter who is better than him. He was just there for a paycheck. He was never going to be a great champion after this. Those dreams had already been destroyed, by Calzaghe. Also, bear in mind that I'm not saying this win does amazing things for Calzaghe's, like rank as an ATG or anything. I am merely talking in the context of the worst beating, both physically and mentally, of Jeff Lacy's career.
A more brutal beating? In order maybe Jones-Calzaghe-Taylor Career wise? Calzaghe by far. Then again Lacy had no business fighting Jones or Calzaghe. The Taylor fight made the most sense because no one knew how much Taylor had left(we still don't). The same goes for the Jones fight too but we all know Jones doesn't have it. If only he let his hands go much more he could've beat Hopkins on points. Hops would've killed himself had that happened lol.
