    Why such trite responses?

Jones had a fantastic career winning titles from middleweight all the way up to heavyweight. He displayed a degree of dominance rarely seen, beat some excellent fighters and was one of the most athletically gifted boxers ever.

He had some ordinary names on his record but so did Duran and like Duran he only had the sole loss when close to his best.Jones has some embarassing losses when he was over 35 but again so did Duran.

The dismissivness Jones receives on this forum is pathetic. His best wins are downplayed, his opposition downgraded in fact the only thing that gets talked up is his alleged steroid use (even though what he tested positive to was an over the counter suppliment that wasn't banned until 2004 and he never failed a test before or after).

Duran deserves to rank higher but it's certainly not a stupid question nor are they beyond comparison and anyone who says differently is either a blind Duran worshipper or a Jones hater pure and simple.

Duran claims he was on diuretics (=excuse-making) but according to his doctor he wasn't, not even for the second Leonard fight apparently

No, he'd get put on the ropes like Leonard and take a wide mugging. And Jones is probably Top 20 for me, I'm no hater.

    Duran H2H > Jones H2H

    Thanks. :good
Obviously I thought my question was a fair one and obviously I expected a very heavy majority saying Duran, but i would hoped at least some more would have allowed it to provoke a bit of thought about Roy Jones and a bit more reasoning or analysis of where the gap between them starts and ends.
I'd say Duran too, but if someone was to say Roy Jones Jr. I wouldn't dismiss them as a loon. Jones was great enough not to be scoffed at.

Especially from those who say they use "head-to-head" and "dominance" as major criteria in defining greatness, I'd hope for a little bit more leeway given to Jones' case.

Picking Duran over X doesn't mean X is not a great fighter.

Of course. Both were great fighters.

But asking a question where I know the majority are going to say "Duran" doesn't mean that there isn't any room for debate or that it's a stupid question.

Yes, it's a serious question. I'd say that in terms of "head-to-head" abilities and displays of "dominance", it's certainly a live debate.
Duran may be a winning in resume and longevity, but even at age 31 he was losing to guys who weren't that good, or having awfully flat performances. Jones was more or less untouchable and extremely dominant in just about every fight from age 20 to age 34. These are real debatable points, and by some people's criteria would make the question of "greatness" a closer call than the dismissive remarks on this thread allow for.

It is certainly not as far fetched a question as some here would like you to believe. Duran has the slightly better wins and was only KO'd once, by a monster hitter. That's the main things between them in terms of record. On the other hand, Jones was at no point in his career oupointed by the likes of Laing and the only time he lost in his prime was a DQ.

As for H2H that's too speculative IMO. Both seemed nigh unbeatable in their primes, perhaps Jones slightly more so.

Duran was a better fighter than Jones IMO. Much better skills and physical attributes that weren't far away.

I think they're pretty close in terms of accomplishments. Duran fought better opponents, but also lost more. He has the better single win, but that is somewhat tainted by the way he conducted himself in the rematch. It's a tough call for me.
