Brock Lesnar goes from doing German Suplexes and jumping through cardboard tables to being this all conquering beast in MMA. Yeah he was a great amateur wrestler but come on. If it was a precise and skilled sport he couldn't do that. You can wrestle, do some martial arts karate kid ****, some like that Rogers guy are nothing but brutes with a bit of power in their fists who take a wild swing and hope for the best. I don't see any skill whatsoever in what he does yet he can be successful enough. There are some very raw fighters in MMA that look more like very strong natural street fighters which is why I don't see it as a highly skilled sport. That **** don't fly in boxing, you can't come from judo or wrestling and don a pair of gloves just because you're strong and a natural fighter and expect to do well. There is far too much science to it.
True, it remains to be seen how it progresses. I just don't think the premise or rules make for a highly skilled sport precisely because its mixed and there is a lot of variety. They have to adapt, I take that point Fleman makes, but also it makes for a lot of huge stylistic disadvantages far more so than boxing and bumrushing where guys are just charging good stand up boxers or martial artists and they are looking to land a miracle hayemaker or kick or they're ****ed against these types once they get hold of them. It all makes for a frenetic type of viewing which is exciting to many people but skills can go out of the window. Like in boxing where guys are just teeing off on each other and brawling, thats when skills go down the toilet and you see a lot of that kind of action in a different form in MMA. The most skill I see in it is when two good ground fighters are on the floor but there are more specific sports where you can see that. Or in general when two similar type of fighters fight in MMA is where you see the most skill. Mixed fighting doesn't allow skill to thrive in my opinion it ****s the sports over and *******izes them which is why boxing will always be superior because everyone operates within specific parameters.
"How’s he going to defend my takedowns?” said Toney. I seriously hope that was just a slip of the tounge and he meant "knockdowns"! This fight should be fun to watch whilst it lasts, but doesn't exactly enhance the image of UFC, or MMA in general.
I honestly preferred the UFC when you could wear a gi/all weight classes against each other, then it was genuinely 'who's the hardest out of?' and street fighters Vs Boxers, Ju-Jitsu vs Wrestling etc etc and it really was style Vs style. But now everyone has a mixed approach, there are designated weight classes and IMO it takes away from the almost childlike excitemet I would get watching UFC on a crummy VHS as a kid, with your mates having a spliff at about 12/13 and it was almost like you had stumbled across a real fight the adrenaline rush you get, and the likes of Joyce Gracie (in particular Joyce) had an almost mythical feel about them to us. It was 'he's hard as ****' rather than 'he's an athlete', as it was plain to see (for me anyway) that boxing was more of an artform and that they weren't 'learning a discipline' but that boxers were almost majestic. When I revisited MMA at about 14 I preferred K-1...I felt the UFC had 'sold out' in a way. I didn't like the regimental side of things. As I say there is more of a bled to styles nowadays but with it's more recent structure and firmer rules system conditioning and rounded technique has improved, to such a degree that I consider it enjoyable again. I almost felt my fun was being spoiled by MMA becoming stricter and less underground, but Fedor in particular demonstrates how technically deadly man can be. I get a different feeling watching it than I do with the sweet science, but now feel I can analyse the sport as I do with boxing. It's no longer what I would've called 'a glorified street fight' But then I used to think Gene Tunney was '**** and old fashioned' :rofl Opinions change, maybe you will see something in an MMA fight that makes you 'click' TFFP and might find yourself enjoying it more. I've really enjoyed this thread thus far :good
it would be great to see toney knock him out with the first few punches of the fight..i can just imagine it now. im online in ibiza right now ..had to come on ive had enough of the sun right now.
They said the same of me when in Thailand EnglishWay. You can't get on it all day!!!! Not in thatheat :deal

Toneys step dad or something is some grand master in some kind of martial arts and was a successful kickboxer in Asia. I remember hearing an interview with toney a couple year ago where he said he was training in martial arts so hes had a couple years training anyway rather than just a few months
