first off let me start by saying i'm new to the fourm although i've been checking in on this site for a while i've never posted recently i was looking back at some older fights an happen to rewatch this one a fight that trinidad won but i personally believe the wrong decision was made i think the main reason de la hoya may not have gotten the nod was because he wasen't fighting in his normal manner an instead decided to be more mobile most liikely making some ppl think he was unwilling to really trade/battle with the purto rican warrior i happen to like the change in style an thought most of the clean an more effective shots were landed by oscar so i ask who do you think should have took this or do you think the correct decision was made...
Yep he thought he was so far ahead he did nothing for the last 3 rounds. While he looked great in the first 9 he didn't expand a inordinate amount of energy, I'm sure cardio wasen't a problem he just feared the power of Tito. Turned out to be a big mistake. Mexican fans were very upset at his lack of warrior spirit. Wen people think of Oscar they often think of these later round and his fight with Pacquaio. I just wish more people would remember that last round against a absolute beast in Ike Quartey. He needed something big to be sure and risked evreything to pull it out.
I think it's fair to say that the judges penalised Oscar for his tactics. That fight was years in the making and Oscar ellected to box a careful fight, when everyone expected a war. The judges are capable of bias as much as the fans. Don't get me wrong Oscar literally schooled Tito. I thought he won 7 of the first 9. His tactics in the last three were lunacy and he'll have to live with that unfortunately. Overall Oscar proved himself to be the better boxer on the night and Trinidad knows it. Tito didn't land one meaningful combination in twelve rounds - that tells it's own story.
I remember having the fight 9 rounds to 3 for Oscar. It was clear victory, but then again its Oscars fault, he ran in the last 3 rounds as if he was sure to win. So even though I had Oscar winning on my scorecards I think its fair that Tito got the nod because Oscar was a disgrace in the last couple of rounds, I will never forgive him for that.
I don't know about never forgiving him for it. Nine months later he fought like a true warrior against the best version of Sugar Shane Mosley EVER and created one of the true classics at 147lbs. Oscar's a brave man who just ****ed up that particular night.
I dont give a damn. Fact is when you are fighting the biggest fight in your career, you dont fight like a ***** just because you think you are winning. That fight was a disgrace, and in my opinion overshadows all the other great fights De la hoya has been in. What pisses me of is when people call Mayweather a runner, you want to see a true runner? The watch De la Hoya vs Trinidad in the last couple of rounds, **** Mayweather at least throws more punches when he runs.
Nice disclaimer , i popped my ESB cherry by making a very bold statement that Amir Khan would be a 3 weight world champion :good , however i still beleive that . Anyway what a fight man , around about that time it seemed every other fight Oscar was in was all out war , he was and to me still is the most entertaining fighter of the modern era , IMO he won the fight , and the implications that the loss had on Oscar were un reversable , from somewhat of a naturally insecure man anyway i dont think he ever 100% got that decision out of his mind , and lets not forget that fight back then was dubbed as one of the biggest fights in WW history , huge huge fight and a really really bad decision . Ive scored the fight many times and i get the same result every time , De La Hoya by 2 rounds , it was a robbery , but all the same a great fight !!! BTW , read American Son , De La Hoya's book , excellent insight into why he chose the hit and run tactics in the later rounds :good
When you back pedal for the last 2-3 rounds, anything can happen. De La Hoya must have been out of his ****ing mind to pull that **** after putting on a wonderful boxing display for the majority.
So do I, but he brought it on himself. You want to see how you close a strong performance look at Barrera/Hamed. Already had the fight won, but Hamed was given a pasting for the last two rounds. This was also against a feared puncher...Marco was the man.
The thing is though I think Oscar was absolutely done, his stamina was never good and he spent the whole fight moving, moving, moving. I seriously think that if he had stood and traded in those last three he would have been knocked down, possibly out.
I find this to be an ambitious statement...nothing in that fight suggested to me Oscar was in any remote danger of being stopped.
I think that De La Hoyas legs were definately shaky in those last few rounds, and Trinidad ALWAYS finished strong. So if Oscar did attempt to trade with Trinidad he takes a beating IMO, he had slowed down majorly and his punches had zero power. So although De La Hoya wasnt hurt it had more to do with his running than anything else, how do you think De la Hoya would have fought if it had been a 15 rounder?
He fought like a warrior with Mosely cause Mosely was the smaller man, Oscar also ran from Gonzalez to, because gonzales was also his height. Plain and simple Oscar was a bully.
