Floyd Mayweather is a disgrace to the sport. I have been a Floyd supporter from the beginning and have ranked him as pound for pound the best fighter in the world since 2003 when Roy Jones struggled in his first fight with Antonio Tarver. Floyd is so versatile and so good defensively that I did not think there was a fighter in the world that should have been ranked ahead of him. Plus even though he took the Roy Jones road in 2003 and 2004 and milked HBO as he fought one mediocre opponent after another, I felt that his resume which included wins over Jose Luis Castillo, a streaking Angel Manfredy, and a respected champion in Genaro Hernandez who had never lost at the weight merited his position atop the pound for pound rankings. Even after the Christmas holidays I backed Mayweather and blamed Manny Pacquiao for not submitting to Floyds demands for drug testing. I figured if you are clean why not take the tests, its a 40 million dollar payday. So I continued to back Mayweather and blamed Arum for not making the fight, but since then Pacquiao has made it clear that he wants the fight and seems to have made the concessions necessary for the fight to move forward, but Mayweather has not made an effort to make the fight a reality and this is going to hurt his legacy. Great fighters from Sugar Ray Leonard to Ray Robinson always sought out the best available competition. They challenged themselves because they knew it would fatten their bank accounts as well as their legacies. Say what you want about Oscar De La Hoya, yah maybe he was not Sugar Ray Leonard, but after a few years of seasoning, he always challenged himself. From Felix Trinidad to a huge Bernard Hopkins to an undefeated Shane Mosley, Oscar always fought the best. He may not have won all the time, but at least he tried, and that is a lot more than Floyd Mayweather has done.

it doesn't pay the bills,but when you are already financially set for life,why not fight the top dogs in the game....something that sugar ray,thomas hearns,marvin hagler,roberto duran,etc,etc,etc did!

 

SRR was about the money just as much, if not more, than Floyd. He stated himself that he didnt even like the sport, it just gave him the opportunity to make a lot of money.

 

If Mayweather would have taken that loss against Castillo first time around (even though I thought Mayweather edged it)...do you think Mayweather would have taken the legacy route instead of the money route? Would have been interesting to see how that played out...

All the biggest names in boxing negotiated the **** out of their contracts.

 

And the same could be twisted around and said about Manny. He most certainly hasn't fought the best in the business and even if it was argued that he had, he fought them under his terms and conditions and at a catch weight which benefited him. What's he going to do - fight Margo at 140?

Margo certainly doesn't deserve the chance but if he mauls Manny having been destroyed by Mosley who was later made to look like an amateur by Mayweather it may well prove telling.

yeah but the problem is that the more money that is on offer the more sportsmen will sell their soul to get what they want.

part of the romanticism of past fighters is that they weren't as mercenary and 'false' as some today...but that doesn't mean in the least that they wouldn't have been if the stakes were higher.

money is a disease that corrupts the value system of sportsmen.

 

Bills or not legacy plays a major role in this sport especially when great fighters are involved.

 

Compare the NBA, and the likes of Jordan vs Karl Malone. Whose getting paid more today? Whose got the rings and all of the records? Jordan is still in the top 10 with all his endorsements. Legacy pays if you do it right.
