This is a tough fight for Billy as Qawi is like a Monster in a nightmare, he keeps coming. But I see this fight much like the Battina bout with Billy picking his shots, countering, staying just out of reach for a 15rd. UD.
I like Qaqwi here.I think at Lightheavy there are few fighters that could beat him in his prime.I think hes too strong for Conn.
Qawi couldn't show anything Billy hasn't seen already. He went in there against heavyweights who were stronger than Qawi(Gus Dorazio, etc). And despite the prevailing myth, Conn traded with Joe Louis on MANY occasions in their first fight (not just in the final fatal round) and won many of those exchanges. Billy fought in the danger zone with Louis many times. If he can go that long and do that well against Joe- who is more powerful and infinitely faster and more dangerous than Qawi- then I don't see how he couldn't handle Dwight. Conn by UD. He boxes circles around Qawi, who has trouble hitting him and when he does, Billy can take it.
I have to give Qawi alot of credit in the trenches, compact, short strong arms, power. Billy was sooo fast including in close so I'm not sure who to give the edge to in that department, but when it comes to staying a half step and a jab ahead its Conn consistantly in every round he boxes this way. Dwight times and catches him with some good right hands along the way but not enought to take away the points Billy builds up to a UD.
I will take 'THE CAMDEN BUZZSAW'. I have tons of respect for Qawi, the guy was a beast he is very underated.. Qawi dec or late tko!!
I think Qawi would have to stop Conn and I think that's unlikely. Qawi was underrated defensively but I see Conn banking a lot of rounds being busy and boxing. Conn W 15.
Qawi was a stylistic nightmare for most anybody at 175, and I don't think Conn would be any exception. Billy had a 72-1/2 inch reach, an inch less than his purported height. The 5'5" Qawi's reach measured 71 inches, freakishly long for his stature. Billy was not defeated as a light heavyweight, while Ike was decisioned by arguably the greatest of them all in what may have been that great's most flawlessly executed performance at 175. Billy had the skills, toughness and endurance to manage a 15 round win, but a split decision would be a very likely outcome, and I would not bet money on it either way. As gifted as he was, his ring intelligence wasn't always at the level shared by Michael Spinks, Charles or Loughran, and that could cost him here.
I agree with you...Conn by dec. Fans today are not aware how good billy conn was before he met Joe Louis in 1941..He beat Melio Bettina ,a burley southpaw twice,Gus dorazio, Gus Lesnevich,Gunnar barlund, a prime Lee Savold,etc..Most were heavier than the 174 lb Conn,Then his great stand against arguably the most vfeared puncher of alltime ,Joe Louis.. Qawi, how tough he was ,would be cannon fodder for Joe Louis in 1941.. The only Light heavy of modern times that might have beaten the prime Conn, was Ezzard Charles...Now that would have been a battle !.
Good post amigo. Though I would give Archie Moore and John Henry Lewis(a TERRIBLY underrated fighter) a decent shot at beating Billy. What do you think?
On the contrary to what seems to be the trend, I think Qawi was a nightmare stylistically for certain stylists a lot more than others. The standup boxer-punchers (barring the very elite) and sluggers I think he'd fare more than well against, but the out-boxers/rangy box-punchers (Foster comes to mind) would make good use of his plodding approach and short stature. Keep him behind the end of the jab, use lateral movement, and attack in spurts. I think someone like Foster for instance would knock him out cold.
I agree that Qawi is a stylistic problem for Conn. All else being equal, I believe Qawi would prevail due to styles. The problem for Qawi here is that all else is not equal. Conn is on a slightly higher level...in my opinion. I think Conn wins a decision over 15, but Qawi could have some moments in this fight.
i think that Conn would outmaneuver Archie Moore,And as for John Henry Lewis, hewas considered a sleek and powerful puncher... Besides, as a youngster ,I lived next door to a trainer of JH Lewis, who started me as a boxing devotee..I would be in his house every night and woukld playfully spar with JH Lewis's stablemates...Never Saw Lewis in person, but I am prejudice in his favor to this day... But Billy Conn at his best was a great lightheavyweight, second to none.IMO... Except for Gene Tunney, and possibly the LH Ezzard Charles ...
Oh?? Would those stablemates happen to be Red Bruce and Honey Boy Jones? They were Lewis's stablemates under Gus Greenlee. Are you from Pittsburgh?:good
No, His name was Frank BuBois..He was one of the trainers of JH Lewis, and would be away from Ny quite often..His sister owned the house where my parents rented...One of his stable fighters was named tommy Jones.a good welterweight, who would teach me a young whippersnapper the rudiments of boxing...i still have the rubber mouthpiece he gave me so long ago..It is now petrified.like a rock....
