Tyson has an under rated chin, even though it is rated highly.

    True.

Tyson took clean knockout punches from one of the heaviest hitters of all time and was not actually KOED, but battered and out of gas. Hell, he had to be nudged after that shot at the end.

The punishment he took from Douglas was also insane. The guy was taking knockout punches all night, and I mean all night. Sure, Douglas is not known to be a particularly hard hitter, but he hits hard enough.

Holyfield had him out on his feet. Again, he was taking clean shot after clean shot after clean shot without going down.

In his younger days he was rarely rocked.

    etc

    etc

    etc.

What did David Tua ever do to get ranked above him in the chin department?

Tua took some pretty incredible shots from Ibeabuchi and Lewis and didn't go anywhere.

Tyson doesn't have a bad chin though I agree. Although in his early days he didn't really get caught too often due to his great movement, nor was he in with anyone that could really bang.

a lot of people probly remember the older days where he was knocked down and didnt get up when he became a head hunter fighter from 2000 onwards, he probly could have but didnt have the heart to desire to. he had a great chin but when knocked down he didnt get up for whatever reason and most people rate a fighter's chin also with when getting knocked down, if they get up or not not only on if they dont go down or not.

How's it underrated if it's rated highly?

Unless it's meant to be rated as solid iron, McCall style? In which case it isn't, so rating seems fine.

He's got a good chin. That tree stump of a neck helps tremendously.

here's why. when tyson was getting outboxed by douglas and holyfield, he couldn't strategically change things around. so they kept beating the hell out of him for round after round. so his chin took more battering than a fighter who lost but was not beaten in one sided rounds. like holyfield did against lewis. when holyfield was hurt by lewis, he was still able to strategically box competitively to lessen the round after round punishment. this is something that tyson did not do. the results were of course different...tyson got knocked out (not because of his chin but his strategic inability) where holyfield just lost.

it's not fair to compare the 2002 tyson because he was indeed shot (even though lewis made him look especially shot). but still, i think tyson took a lot more punishment than tua did. tyson may have been a zombie and probably had little chance of winning after the first 4 rounds in the lewis fight, but i still think he put on a better effort than tua who after a few lewis bombs no longer fought to win.

when vitali took a terrific lewis uppercut, he intelligently clinched. same with holyfield against tyson. these guys made their chins look better by helping out their chins with strategy. tyson did not.

i don't think tyson has the chin of mccall, chuvalo, or tex cobb. but he one tier down and high in that tier along with muhammad ali, evander holyfield, george foreman etc. who had great chins.

tyson was pretty resilient after taking a punch as his early fights showed. people dismiss those partially because tyson made them look like nothing and partially because they take success for granted. ruddock's smash on dokes looked very devastating but the same punch on tyson did not look like much.

no one ever judges something by itself (usually doesn't matter either). we don't judge the chin by itself. we judge it along with heart, ability, etc. people only care that mike tyson was knocked out 5 times in his career...they don't care about how...or that his chin was placed an abnormal amount of stress that other fighters (like tua) would not allow. such was tyson's lack of strategy and his style. he either won convincingly or lost convincingly. this creates a misconception with his chin.

Tyson's chin was never an issue in any of his bouts. He was never sparked out, you had to wear him down. And he fought several fighters that could "really bang"--Lewis, Ruddock, Bruno, Bonecrusher...

Tyson had a GREAT chin, but I'm not sure taking a load of punishment and "not going down" is the main criteria in measuring chin.
If Tyson was "out of his feet" against Holyfield that means he was knocked senseless or at least half-way senseless and that means he was rocked, ie. his chin didn't save him, his chin resistance was penetrated.
I think in those cases it proves more about the strength of his legs and the depth of his centre of gravity than his chin.
Tyson did have a GREAT chin, but the not going down thing is overrated.

Yes he had a great chin.
Some people just think he didn't because he got knocked around by Douglas, who wasn't the hardest puncher out there.
He also took a very bad beating in that fight. Which kind of screws up that theory too.
He just had a good chin!!
