Ali by far, even though i would'nt exactly call him a offensive powerhouse, but he did do things offensively that people and experts thought was impossible for him.Mayweather has great defense, but its a bit overrated considering he never turns it into offense like Ali did,Ali took far to many punches though for the kind of speed and reflexes that he had, which to me makes him a bit overrated,Ali is the better fighter by a small margin.
why would anyone vote for floyd? ali has stoppage victories over liston, frazier, cooper, foreman and who could forget the beating he gave tirrel
Never turns his defense into offense? He's a counter puncher, that by definition is turning your defense into offense.
The problem with that logic,is he woud'nt be able to do it against some of the more skilled fighters of all time and some of the great volume guys, examples: Hearns,SRL,SRR,Curry,Norris,Duran,Pryor,McCallum ect even a James Forrest would give him tons of problems,he would have to rely more on his offense ,which is pretty non existant at Welterweight.
Floyd's offense is being terribly under-rated in this thread. Overall offensively I'd pick Ali by a small margin, but people forget how offensively brilliant Floyd was against the likes of Corrales, Gatti, Corley, Mitchell etc
Counter-punching has two components! The defense (while the opponent is punching) and the counter, or offense. Do not try to merge them as single entity. Defense is always defense and offense is always offense. When you throw a punch while in defensive position, that punch is offense, while that position is its defensive component. That is why you can never turn a defense to an offense! Technically impossible.
Gatti was a sitting duck are you kidding? Corrales was a man on his way to jail with all kinds of out of the ring problems and he wasnt even 50% ready for that fight, notice when Chico was out with a clear mind crushing heads like Castillo who had Floyd crying,he did everything he could to duck him,get real dude his offense is not very good at WW.
Its not technically impossible. Floyd game is to try and to make his opponents make mistakes to give him openings for offense. For instance luring Mosley to throw an ill fated right cross that Floyd roles and at the same time throwing his own lead right. That is turning defense into offense. Hell Bruce Lee spoke about this when formulating Jeet Kun Do. *head pat*
Most of ESB doesnt know **** about boxing thats why. You get a bunch of morons in every thread comparing a present fighter with a legend. Floyd has one of the most dynamic effective offenses in boxing today. Your average ESB moron thinks a fighter like Pavlik or Margarito are better offensively then Floyd lol.
Yes he is throwing 1 punch at a time, tell me how that would work with someone like Hearns who was faster than him stronger, busier, and multi skilled offensively,or someone like Pryor throwing lots of punches from all angles with a tremendous chin,Offense is what we are talking about,Ali's offenses alowed him to rise to the occastion against superior opposition which Mayweather has yet to do,his offense struggles against much less than superior fighters.
Hearns was naturally bigger then Floyd you clown. Nearly twice his size. Of course he's going to bigger and faster. Ali was similarly bigger then the vast majority of his opponents. Mayweather is in comparison smaller then most of his opponents. Being that he's a 5 time champion and started his career at 106. The very fact that he is able to beat bigger fightrs, school guys like Mosley, Gatti, Judah, Corrales with his offense, shows how talented an offensive fighter he is. And Mayweathers schools pryor btw. Who needed drugs to overcome a super featherweight.
